I got a new wood stove that i'm going to pick up this weekend. I got the pipe, the mat, all the stuff i need to install it from the guy i got the stove from. i don't know what all the stuff is exactly, he just said he need to know the pitch and how much pipe i needed, the rest of the stuff will be there.

problem being i had a friend who was going to help me install it, and now it looks like he's too busy to do so. instead of waiting around on him, i think i'm just going to tackle it myself. i don't think it could be too difficult.

i live in a 1 story house, its only about 1100sqft, roof is a 4 pitch, i don't have an attic to speak of, can't get in there, just have to poke a hole in the ceiling and go to town as best i can.

basically looking for some advice from someone thats done this before. what all do i need and how complicated is it? i used to do construction for a living but i was a framer, have done some roofing, just need to know what i'm getting myself into.

done some searching, didn't find anything overly helpful. anyone give me a step by step, if its something i should/can do myself as its not complicated or what?

Make sure you have the clearances all right, the clearances for the stove should be printed on the back on a tag. What kind of chimney pipe are you going to use? I wouldn't use anything other than insulated metalbestos pipe for a standalone install, triple wall is too problematic.

I'm a do-it-yourself'er. Not much I won't try. My shade tre @$$ even managed to put a new tranny in my front wheel drive car. But when it came time to put the new stove/chimney in I hired it done. It cost me $400, but that was money well spent. I feel much better about the whole thing. And it made it SO much easier when the insurance company came over for the inspection. They came ready to measure clearances and do a full inspection. I told them it was a pro installation and who did it. They said, "Cool.", snapped a photo for the file and left.

If you don't have someone experienced to use as a resource, I'd reccomend you do the same. Don't mean to be insulting, but it's one of those "If you have to ask, you probably shouln't" things.

You need to be covered by your insurance company. To be covered by your insurance company, you need a building permit and pass inspection. Then notify your insurance company and they will come out and look at your installation - want to see permit/inspection documents.

Then installing to code is per the woodstove manufacturer's installation instructions including size of hearth coming out in front of stove, R-value of hearth (if wood floor), and clearances from walls.

Each wood stove is different for clearances from walls! Needs to be installed for your specific model.

Chimney needs to be sized to your woodstove (5, 6 inches)

Chimney needs to be installed per stainless steel chimney manufacturer's instructions. Get that here...
