We are looking at a couple of new (to us) bucket trucks with forestry package, would appreciate any input on the details.

Both have around 50k miles around 11k hours.

Bothe have Aerial lif of Conn. 52' buckets on them. (we looked at the same chassis's with hi-rangers and it was kind of a toss up on the lift). Both lifts have the hydraulic 10 yr. service updates on them.

The trucks have been gone through and painted.

Both have the t444e engine, one is a 1999 model with manual tranny one 1998 with auto.

The price they are asking is $42k for each one.

Any and all input on the trucks would be appreciated.

Oh, they were wright tree service trucks.

Thanks, Fred

I like those trucks but the hours seem high for the miles. I have a 2001 4700 with the DT466 and 90,000 miles but it has only 4000 hours on it and I know the miles and hours are right. The price seems high to me.

I would not by a truck with 11,000 hr. on it do the math 11000 hr. x 55 mph.(55 is the speed limit in ca.) = 605,000 mi. worth of ware and tare on the Eng. and PTO / trans

That actually figures out to be a little over 23 hours a week for 9 years. The hour meter still runs while idleing and using the bucket.

Wright tree service is a line clearance company.

It appears to be a used but not abused truck. We also saw two other trucks that were in the process of "going through" so we saw that they did not just cover up a lot of rust and dents.

I believe the hydraulics update (mandated by the manufacturer at ten years) includes new cylinder packing and all new hoses on the aerial. Costs over $5000 dollars.

Sounds to high. Check out Treetrader.com or even flea-bay.

Actually, this came from an ad from treetrader. Why do you think this sounds high?

ALC requires cylinder rods, seals, and cables to be replaced every eight years.

Glad to hear from you motor, I've read some of your other posts on lifts. Was hoping for your input on this thread.

These two trucks both have all of those "updates" already done. The date is stamped on the end of the cylinder.

There is another truck that we looked at. The same chassis with about the same miles, same year nut with an altec 60' boom. It was $8k more. Is the altec boom had the pistol grip control while the ALC have levers.

No real preference on our part with the controls but the ALC seemed smoother.

Is the Altec worth $8000 more and why?

How do you gauge how many hours a truck should have?

We are kinda in a tight spot right now because our other lift truck is an OLD aplundh that you can't get parts for and the pivot is broken. We were planning on replacing it this summer but now we have to. we are losing money everyday we don't have one working.

Any input appreciated, Thanks

Keep looking around, 11000 hours is too much for that price. I prefer Hi-Rangers but newer Altecs are ok. Pistol grip rules, levers suck.

What price would you pay for that truck?

I would not buy it. Line clearance, ridden hard and put away wet. I have looked around on the 'net, lots of trucks out there, why are you so set on this one?

I am not dead set on one of these two trucks. I am looking for reasons why not to buy.

We looked at the same chassis with an Altec boom at another dealer and the price was $8000 more. About the same miles and hours on the truck. Is the Altec boom worth it?

The ALC boom truck has just had all the updates that motor talked about which is around $8000 dollars worth. The truck chassis has been gone over and everything that needed fixed has been fixed and the truck has been painted. The tires are new on front and 90% on the back.

By our calculations, the truck was bought at auction and the dealer has put around $17,000 into it.

We could buy a cheaper truck but we would have to put the same money and time into it.

Broaden the circle of trucks you are looking at. 11000 hours is too much, as myself and others have said. I cannot say the Altec boom is worth more, I have never ran an ALC, so I don't know.
You calculate the dealer put 17k into this truck, do you know this? And he bought it at auction, what do you think he paid? Like ASD says, the engine pto, etc have 605,000 miles on them. Why do you think they got rid of it? Lots of things have not been replaced. Probably ran by many different guys, some who cared, some who didn't.

I don't now, am just giving you my advice, and that is keep looking.

I appreciate your opinion, that is why I started this thread. Sorry if I seem bullheaded.

How do you gauge how many hours a truck ahould have?

it's hard to gauge !! but trucks with a pto the mi on th od. do not mean any thing it's the hr. that count !!!!! so the hr. x 55 mph will help give you an idea. if that rig you are looking at was a dump truck (they both cost the same when new) had 600K on it it's worth about $10 K

Well first off 50,000 miles and 11,000 hours is a queer combination. Something is not right about that deal to start with. I like international trucks but have never seen any old line clearance truck I would want to pay over $30,000 for. Of course they all carry the same old story....new white paint, all gone over, recent updates, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, right.

A common problem we see, yes it looks clean but sometimes people put more money into paint then mechanical repairs. It may look clean but that won't get you anywhere when your broken down at every job you go to. Used equipment is used equipment you never know if you'll get a problem child, lift or truck.

As far as the hours is that reading off of a factory hour meter or an aftermarket one? Is it wired correctely? Had it been wired wrong for a while and then reconnected the right way? Or even replaced with a used one? There's sometimes no telling what someone else has done! I've seen brand new trucks with 500 hours on them because the things wired wrong and running 24/7!

As far as the Altec being higher priced...well there could be many reasons. The Altec has the pistol grip like you said and may have other options on the truck as well? Maybe the guy paid too much for it or it needed a bunch of work. There are so many variables.

The ALC is a good unit, having the updates done is a plus. But put money aside for future updates. The Altec won't have the required repairs other than your OSHA/ANSI inspections and is a more "modern" lift with a larger support network.

Food for thought. I'd go with an Altec, LRIV or LRV but that's just me.

I have that truck, its a 2002 4700 with the t444e. A good reliable truck and boom. No power, if you live where there are hills, don't get it. Get one with a dt 466. I paid 25 k for mine, all they did was slap on a new coat of paint, even though they "did" all that other stuff to it. I spent about 5 k on mine. No problems in two years of hard use
