444e is essentially a 7.3 liter if you do have a problem with it they are expensive to rebuild as they must be removed from the truck (being a parent bore motor). it is a good motor in some applications ( pickups ) but consider that you are running it at idle any time you use your bucket truck.
if i were you i would look only at wet sleeve engined trucks ( thats why there is such a large disparitty in the price of dt466 and 444 trucks) as they are much cheaper and faster to repair.
can only tell you that trucking companies (we have1) consider them(444) to be 180000 -225000 before getting rid of, vs 450000 for dt466.

factoid: we have had a dt 466 powered truck completely overhauled in under 28 hours for 6k labor included! try that with a 444e

So is running a diesel at idle bad? Or does it mean you have more wear on the engine than the miles indicate. I thought you could idle a diesel for days to weeks with no problem.

If idleing for extended periods, the rpms need to be kicked up a bit for better cylinder wall lubrication. Otherwise, oil doesn't get splashed around in the crankcase enough to lube the cylinder. Idleing in a diesel is much better than a gas engine. That's one of the reasons for pony engines in gas engine chassis's (sp).

Go off of the hour meter more than odometer to gauge wear and maintenance periods.

Ghillie is right in the case of a bucket I would gauge its use by the hours rather than miles. 11000 hours would be app. 5 years 8 hoursday 5 days week.
