I was looking at a 390xp at my dealers. It is 135.00 more then I can get it off the net for. I have been tempted to buy off the net and save the money. I have bought several saws from this guy and he has always been good to me. The question for you guys is. How many of you have went ahead and saved the money and bought from the net forgoing a good local dealer.

I basically figure that the advantages of having a local dealer are worth paying a little more for. I give them a lot of business, and they give me good service, free advice, a price break now and then -- they just quoted a 660 at a price very competitive with what Bailey's gets for a 395xp, for instance.

have you tried bargaining with your dealer for a better price?

Dealer or Internet?

A dealer sells more than the product. Yeah, I'm in the same situation now deciding on my next saw. What's a hundred bucks today? I've pestered a dealer several times on my old Jonsered and he's helped me, knowing that I need a new saw. Do I pester him, use his time, and not have any conscience?
If you need warranty service on that new internet saw, most dealers would likely think twice before taking the job on.
Put another way, what if you had a store and you had tirekickers coming in all day?

A hundred bucks or so is NOTHING today. Pay him the hundred and you have made a worthwhile contact that will feel obligated to help you with your warranty and any other major or minor problems with the new saw.
I've debated internet or dealer but if I'm buying a pro saw, I want to buy from a pro who can help me after the sale. You expect zero from HomeDepot if you buy a saw but you help keep a guy in business who can really help you by buying from your dealer. I'm fairly mechanical and can fix many things but I can't fix a warranty or fully understand the new saws with their new technology and their own specific whims.

Dealer!

The 390XP is a new saw - most new things have problems. That said, MOST internet sellers won't help you out, and then you'll have to go back to the dealer you didn't buy from, with your broke down new saw. If you like the guy, and he has been good to you, why won't he treat you right this time? He might not be able to match the price, but if he can come within 10% of the online price, that is totally worth it to keep your money local, and continue to build that relationship with your dealer. I have bought online, and I have also bought from local shops. It is a question YOU will have to answer yourself.

I guess its one of those things I would feel crappy about if something happened to the saw and I had to take it back to him. I guess the one thing I look at is I have always bought everything else from him. Chains, Files, Boots, Raingear, bar oil, mix. Will this one saw be that big a deal.

Well, lay your cards out. Tell him what you can get it for online, how you want to keep the money local and in his pocket, but you are having a hard time because $135 is a lot of scratch to you. Maybe he can help you out with loops of chain...you know, a 100' roll is about $250 to the general public - I am guessing about $175-$200 to a dealer - that equals about 11 cents a driver. If he will spin you 6 chains at cost...that will make up your difference. See...there are other options.

I think that's a great suggestion.

My dealer is good to me. I always seem to get more than I asked for whenever I go in there. When I was rebuilding my 026 and needed parts they not only had every part in stock, he also pulled a couple limiter caps off a parts saw and gave them to me, copied an exploded diagram for me, showed me a trick to getting the intake boot on along with a list of things to look for and notes on assembly. I went in for $50 in parts and came out with a whole lot more. This is the normal kind of service I get, not a one time deal either. My next saw, I'm not even going to argue price.

Only $135, I wouldn't even think about it. I'd even give him a $20 tip. I like the big smile my local dealers get when I walk in the door. Ok, I exaggerated a little bit. But I do believe in staying local for the reasons stated.

I agree. I'd treat him the same way that I would like to be treated.

What comes around goes around.

Heck, I even Rep'ed ya for that!!

On my 290 and FS55, I didn't haggle price at all. When I asked about a 660, the sales manager looked up the MSRP, then quoted me a discount without me even asking for it.

Go with your local dealer,if you have problems with the internet saw you'll both have bad feelings when it needs warranty work. You for going around him for purchase but coming in for warranty service and the dealer for having to service something he didn't sell. Trust me I know what a kick in the teeth it is to go out on a warranty service call only to discover a regular customer bypassed me to save money by going online and now expects me to fix his equipment! In my experience warranty work doesn't pay that great and can be a pain.So let your local guy get the sale and that way he'll still be in business when you need him in the future! Trust me you'll both be glad you did!

We must live in two different worlds "A hundred bucks is Nothing?"
So let him come down in price if a hundred bucks is nothing.

So is the hundred bucks bribe money, "so he feels obligated".
What is he going to give me a hundred bucks off on service work. HAHAHAHA

So why are you askin???????

you really got to be the judge, to stick with what works best,,,,, In the long run if you get in a bind,,,,which if you are in business for yourself,,,,, That dealer you trust in will be there for you,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, That sweet internet deal could turn sour and then where are ya????? JMVHO :)

Well one thing I forgot is the 135.00 turns into 198.03 after sales tax. The internet doesn't charge sale tax shipped to my state. So now instead of a hundred dollars were at 200. I am in buss. for my self also and thinking about this the dealer has never used my service. So I guess the old saying that goes what comes around goes around is true.
