Just got back from a trip home - to Edmonton (Canada) - and was messing with an old Craftsman (2.0 cu. in., 16" bar) saw that was given to my brother. I cleaned it up a little, drained the old gas, refueled, added bar oil, used the start procedure that was on the saw (label), and she started. Went out and bought a new chain and did some light trim work...for what he needs it for...it'll be perfect. I showed him how to adjust the chain tension, and change the chain and how to cut safely...stand to one side of bar and always know where the tip of the bar is etc. . I think the saw will be more of a garage fixture...I'm thinking of calling him in a few weeks to see if he's used it and if not, to drain the fuel. He lives in the city, has a few small Cypress trees and one tree in the backyard, and heats the house with a natural gas furnace and doesn't need a saw really...but it was free and it runs, so he might need it someday.

Anyway...on the saw (label) it says the fuel mixture is to be: 1/2 pt. (part?) oil to 1 gal. gas. What would be the mix ratio? He got a fuel can (came with the saw) with some mix for the saw but he didn't find out what the mix ratio was.

Some pics of the saw:

pt. = pint?

1/2 pint to 1 gallon = 8 ounces to 1 gallon = 16:1 = a lot of oil....

kind of weird notation but I'm just guessing and unless someone else has a better answer, that's my story and i'm sticking to it. he could always call the guy he got the saw from.

16:1 would smoke a lot, methinks. I'd go 32:1, which is 1/2 cup per gallon.

There are plenty of old threads of what mix ratio is best depending on age of saw, quality of oil, etc....

In those days they were mixing with 30 weight. 32:1 with a good modern premix oil will do fine, it would probably run just fine on 50:1 but thats always been a little thin for my taste.

Nice looking rebadged Poulan. I don't have a micro xxv like this series, but the S25s are great little saws for yardwork.

1/2 pints/gallon x 1/8 gallons per pint means a mixture ratio of 16 parts oil per gallon. There's tons of topics filled with heated debate over mixture ratios using newer oils, so I don't want to open that door again, but I think its safe to say that if you're using modern 2 cycle oils, a ratio of 32/1 or 40/1 is safe in this saw. Hope your brother enjoys and gets good use from it.

Thanks for the reply's thus far. I'm going to have him verify the 'pt.'...I'm not sure if I simply wrote down 'pt.' instead of the full word. He has and old string trimmer (Homelite?)...not sure what he mixes for it...but I imagine it'll work for the saw.

I would follow Dan's recommendation.

I just cleaned up one of those same series of saws that belonged to my dad. Cleaned the carb, replaced the fuel line, and fired right up. I have the manual if you would like any more info. I sometimes see them on e-bay and they often go for less than $15 while the Poulans go for around $50.

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind. The saw seems to be running well...if my brother and the saw were closer, I'd be cleaning the carb and giving it a thorough cleaning...but it's running well enough for his needs.
