Went to three different dealers today looking for a .325 .050 chain for the 400 Echo and they had none. Poor dealers or odd-ball chain? At some point the clutch has been changed to an Oregon unit with replacable rim. Bar isnt great either so everything coud be changed at no great loss. Should I go to some other gauge of .325 chain or just give Bailey's some of my chain business and order some 325 .050 loops from them?

I would go with a .325 63 guage you will have better luck finding it locally if you need to. I would just go to lowes or somewhere and buy a bar and chain combo if you bar and chain are shot.

.050", .058", .063" where do we start. why does stihl use 063" on their small frame saws and 050" on their large frame saws??? never figuered that one out. yes i carry .325 - .050" and sell very little we use .058 mostly for the saws we sell but because of elux and stihl we stock the .050 and .063 in .325 and 3/8 and .063" .404
"just my personal opinion i may be wrong...."

That's a darn good question!
Could it be that even though .063 cuts much slower, it leaves a wider kerf which helps beginners not get pinched so much?
.063 isn't any stronger, just slower and heavier. You could argue the bar is stronger, but that would be a weak argument at best.
As a pro who gets his stuff paid for, I won't run .063, if a saw comes with it, I'll change it out.

I hate to break it to you, but .050, .058 or .063 are all the same kerf. The only part that is different are the drivers. They are just stamped narrower for .058 and .050.

50 and 58 share the same preset since the body of the drive links are the same thickness, with the drive tang below the rail being reduced on the 50 gauge. .063 does have 5 thou thicker drive link body requiring its own rivet length. I think the 063 chain is wider overall by this same amount; two hairs! Stihl 3/8 .063 guage also has thicker side straps, but not sure if all manufacturers follow the same rules. Mike might be right about wider kerf for 063 depending on brand.

I found some today at a Stihl dealer. It is Stihl chain and (of course) it takes a ba$tard file. I didn't go for a file, going to try the 3/16. It is odd looking chain with the small 325 chain and cutters that look like they belong on a 3/8 RS. Lots wider kerf than the worn out oregon that was on the saw. Too darned hot here to go give it a try tomorrow plus a farm auction with some unnamed saws listed.

well, try it out, Stihl.325 chain is known for those big cutters, its unmatched by ANY similar .325 chain I know of, nothing else out there is similar.

Ok, good point, Oregon chain cuts the same kerf, Carlton .063 is fatter than .050 and .058, and I don't know about Stihl.

Then with Oregon, just the bar and lower half of the drive link is fatter? What is the sense in that?

On the Oregon website, they recommend .063 for short bars and as they bar gets longer they switch to .050. What is the reasoning?

Could it be that the drive link is stamped? Does that make it stronger or something? Is it weight? What the heck?

Here in Pa. all of the Jonsered with .325 pitch chain come in .058 only. I can get Husky saws that use the 325 chain with .050 or .058, including the 346, most people here want the .050.
Here is an interesting one. When I order the Husky 357s and the 359s, I get them in 3/8 .050 but when I order a 357 with heated handles they only offer them in .325 pitch chain. I have to change them over to 3/8 before I sell them.

Weird,we received 357 in .325 /.058 only. Here, the guys prefer and by far .058,i guess they were used on .058 on 254,257,etc.When we were selling 351,2149,etc ALMOST everbody required for .058 for compatibilty with older models,we had to change them.we asked the distributor ordering saws to send them with .058.
