Advice needed i have some mature trees that i was thinking about selling is it a good idea for me to fell skid and market them myself. Im a fire wood cutter im looking for advice and welcome horn busting thanks

There is no problem with you doing all your own work, I do. You first have to talk to a mill or timber buyer to see if there is a market for your logs. You then find out what log length and diameter they demand. Then you will have to find someone to haul your logs, sometimes the mill will take care of that for you, for a price. The one thing that I should point out is you will never make as much as you think you should. Takes more wood for a truck load than you would think. If you can make this work out you will have a good time and feel you have done something for your self. Great way for you to spend your time, enjoy.

The best advice I can give you, is to let someone else risk their neck, saws and equipment. They will pay you for the privilege :dizzy:

I would suggest you get some bids on your standing timber first, then check markets and see how much your might make for your labor.

If you have trucks and a loader...go for it! As others have suggested, check with your local mill and make sure what they want as far as lengths, little end diameter, species and what not.

Cutting your own timber

No No No!!!!! you have to go and contact your local and state officials, soil conservation, EPA, Green Peace, Tree Hugger club, wild flower preservers, bird watchers org., send notices to all your neihbors, notify FBI, FEMA,NRA,UPS,US Postal Service, Woody Wood Pecker, Smokey The Bear, I think there might be one more, Or else you be put in jail, be on probation, audited, have your mail delivery stopped, your cable disconnected, phone service cancelled, chainsaws destroyed, timber scale broken in two and maybe a slap on the cheek.

Hire someone if you dont know a buyer or mill youll get screwed. What you think is a great log is probably not. No offense

Absolutely...we buy logs all the time from land owners, they have total control and how there property is treated, there are some great loggers out there and sometimes you just want to do it you're self to get it right. You will definitely need someone from the customer to explain how they want their logs cut, sometimes a couple inches is the difference between firewood and veneer stock, huge difference in value.

you need to talk to alot of diffrent people to know who pays the best for diffrent types of wood soft hard pine oak etc and call diffrent mills the little one man band pays the most

logs lenth are 8-12 feet long mostly 8 s

except nobody wants 8 foot logs, and you forgot about 14 and 16 footers, peelers, and trim. and veneer lengths. and length vs. taper vs. scale vs. grade.

So get some advice from the BUYER.

Ignore most of this, the only people you need to talk to get a permit, if its even required where you live is your county/township and the DNR (department of natural resources) both permits are relatively easy to obtain, if somewhat spendy, but the permitting process varies from state to state and county to county.

Otherwise, GO KILL SOME TREES, yard em out call the self loader and get yourself a rather meager check in the mail a few weeks later... but it will still be more than hiring someone to do it, even if you totally drop the ball on bucking and sorting yer logs.

But please, take your time and be safe, call the mills and find out what they are buying and what kind of lengths they want, and what diameters they will take. Seems every area is a little different so the mills want different stuff, we don't know where you live (otherwise we would be there now drinking all your beer and scaring the neighbors...), so its up to you to find out what there buying.

Best of luck to ya, and remember logging is more addictive then crack, and just as dangerous

You recall C Evert Koop MD Surgeon General United States of America? Quitting nicotine is worse than quitting cocaine?

Heed whart the man said. Even if he is dead. No one gets out alive.

Logging is like farming or fishing. It gets in one's blood. Don't quit your day job. Don't kill yourself.

It's your ground. Want someone else working it?

I do my own logging, and the mill sends a truck picks up the logs (the ones I don't put on my band sawmill). The one thing I don't mess with is anything that might make veneer. They are too picky about how it is cut, and a 2" error on the cut can drop the value from $4.00/bd ft to $1.50/bd ft. Since you're already cutting firewood, you've probably got a good handle on what it takes to get a tree safely on the ground and out of the woods. Next thing, you'll be hanging out on the sawmill forum looking at mills. You'll start with a chain saw mill, and move on to a band mill. Sorry, there's no helping you. You're becoming one of us.

Check with someone(s) you know and trust, who have a grape on standing timber value, then you can decide if you want to have your own fun, or pay someone else to work your land. If you have particularly high grade stuff, you may even look at ways to cut, skid, and mill the product before marketing, that way you are selling a higher value product, and paying yourself to fund the process. That is what I am doing. It is an affliction, be warned!

Cutting timber

I know i was just BSing, its allmost impossible around here to anything anymore, once someone sees you doing something right away its "do you have a permit?" or " no you cant do that!" Have fun logging and do it safe!
