I have cut a tree down in my yard 2 and a half years ago and the rounds are completely rotted but the stump which I was going to carve all of a sudden started losing bark and when I pulled bark off it is spongy and moldy back there. Lots of black Beatles and larvae along with some fungus. What is it? If I burn will it spread? Is my home in danger or my neighbors trees?
I took some photos because I do not know what to look for or even what kind of tree it is. It has clusters of spikey hard balls that grew on it. They tore up the roof of the house, played hell on my mower, and made walking in the yard dangerous. It was also leaning over the house. We have had a lot of tree dieing in neighborhood but non like this. Mine was already cut down before it started this rapid decay. Wood was hard and still not dry enough to burn last fall but then this summer all the cut rounds on ground just started disintegrating and stump was ok till this morning I notice bark coming loose.
