Is it really needed, if so, when?

Ok, bear with me guys, I am new to the biz and am getting into selective clearing, timbering and brush mowing.

Now, my question, I have recently acquired some climbing gear from a friend and my question, should I wear a hard hat when climbing a tree and if so, should I wear it on every tree or just on trees I see fit?

I've got tons more questions and once I get back on track with work, you'll see alot more, thanks for your help and patience..

Well every time except when you feel your noggin is not worth protecting.LOL

Seriously ,Just put it on every time you get out of the truck on the jobsite.
It will become habit after a while, and you will get used to it.

Plus it will help you to look perfesional like.

I'll keep that in mind, have to get the guys some to, dont wanna look like a goofball wearing the only hardhat on site..

Have a friend take a 1 pound log up on a step ladder 5' above you and
drop it on your head while wearing the helmet, then have him do the same without the helmet. If you can't feel any difference then you don't need the helmet.
:bang:

i have a hard hat.... somewhere.... i want to tell you to use it, but i dont use mine, and i refuse to be a hypocrite. i will tell you tho that i've met several ppl who were injured both wearing and not wearing hats. since you cant very well life without your head, prolly a good idea to protect it.

You can buy them pretty cheap on ebay. I got a case of twelve for like $20. If you plan on climbing with one you'll need a chinstrap. But I would recommend buying one made for climbing for you and regular one for you groundies. If you dont get one that fits good in the tree, chances are, you wont wear it. I have the "Petzl Vertex Vent" helmet. Thats a little pricey but I got the one that has ear muffs on it. Those are very important too so look into it. Always remember, next to saftey, comfort in the tree is #1. The more comfortable you are the more your concentrating on what your doing instead of a hard hat sliding down in your eyes or your feet hurting cause your boots suck or something like that.

Yes, try this out. :rockn:

You might want to think about getting a rock climbing helmet for when you are up in the tree. You don't have to worry about it getting knocked off your head and it not only offers protection from falling objects but also if you were to fall.

You'd be the only one that didn't look like a goofball.

After a while, you really prefer wearing them.

1. They are great for butting through branches with.
2. They do a nice job of carrying hearing protection that is easy to take on and off.
3. Not bad for a sunshade in the summer heat.
4. The better ones have a rain gutter; that works great in a light rain or drizzle to keep the water from running down your back.

Chances are good that whoever supervises the payroll will decide that you are a better asset, and that you are "career oriented". So...maybe we'll give him a raise.

I am part owner.

And I am making the move from excavating and full out clearing to this niche, it is an unfilled niche in the area and with the economic down turn I am looking anywhere for work and I found it. Plus, the smell of fresh cut pine and burnt diesel is so much better than dirt. But like I said, I am some what new to this, I am just trying to learn..

yeah I know where Elgin is. What kind of gear did you get and is it in good condition?

I have yet to see it, the guy is an ex lineman who recently got new gear and then transferred over to another crew and I told him I'd like to try it out and if I was able to do it, I would buy it.

It should be in pretty good condition, he was only a lineman for 3months until he kicked out on a pole and refused to climb anymore, so it should be in pretty good condition. If he'll ever get it to me..

You do not need 16 oz, just get an 8 oz throwbag and catch it from a 30 ft drop.

About 6 years ago I thought it was too nice a day to put the bucket on, so I set my line, saddled up, and got ready to footlock up into this big black cherry. As soon as I loaded the line, deadwood started raining down on me. Not as comfortable as I was looking forward too.

Talked to the guy today, he'll be swinging by the house Monday afternoon with my spurs, saddle, and everything!

Any tips for me?
