i worked a few days for a company here in savannah......what a joke and i don't just mean the pay. the bucket driver stops for a beer after each job. they think topping is a standard practice leaving no harm to the tree. no one can identify a tree. they call tulip's a maple.......one guy tried spiking up a monster oak with out a rope and got stuck....they pulled him off with the log grappel. i also watched the same guy slam a top into the boom on the bucket.....i thought he was going to get thrown out. plus the pay sucks...last week we removed 6 90ft or better pines(no one knew what kind of pines) for 1800.00 with the stumps. thats 300.00 a tree. with the prices being so low i don't see how i could get paid more. today the other 2 climbers did not show up and they were worried the job would not get done. i put 90% of the job on the ground by 12:30. i figure i'll finish the week and try for a raise or quit. i don't need the exercise that bad.

the scarey thing is i have not seen a decent looking tree svc down here. from the trucks i see on the road they all look like their starving.

The other 2 climbers must have had the Monday morning barley flu!

Mahk Adams (That is Mark with a Bostonian accent) is a short trip away. He moved down there a few years ago. He shows up here now and then so you should be able to find a link to him. he should have some good ideas.

I met a Consulting Urban Forester/ Arborist at the Savanah Tree Dyanmics Conferance. Dudley Hartel [email protected]. The card is at over 2 years old, so that link may be bad. The phone numbe is 706-783-3984. He is based in Gomer, GA.

Funny you posted this.

When I was unsure about staying in this line of work, we moved to Savannah to see the east coast. I figured I could do some pruning for a while.

That did not take off like expected (no one told me storms ravage the area frequently) and I did some warehouse work.

But I did do a moderate amount of pruning on the side.

When I showed up on time for the estimate, people were shocked. When I said I'd be out to do it in 3 days, they were skeptical. When I did it on time, they were smiling.

My experience with that area is that slothfulness and lazyness are abundant. There are exceptions.

But what they call "easy going" in Savannah, is what Oregonians refer to as "laziness".

Man, what a nasty area for bugs. Fire ants. And Sand Gnats - size of fruit flies with bites like mosquitos. And then the Chiggers in the Spanish Moss that hangs from the trees.

Top that off with humidity.

We were back in Oregon is 8 months.

thats pretty funny .......how long ago were you in savannah?

i think me and the wife are about to throw in the towel and move back up north. the houseing market down here is insanely high for an area with no money. there all just hoping a sucker from the north will come down here to drop the cash.

you forget to mention the palmetto bugs.....or have you been trying to block that from your memory?

We bailed out of Savannah about 5 years ago - back to Oregon. The other choice was Seattle, but 1 day driving around there was all it took. Portland may have heavy traffic at times, but nothing compared to Seattle.

We have a nice collection of Shark teeth off the beach in Savannah. Have you taken the time to scavenge for any? The key is not to look for shells at the same time. Its a focus on one shape scavenge. Also, it was interesting that the shape of the tooth indicates what shark it came from.

We never priced houses, but rent was cheaper there than Portland by about 20%. And wages were about 15% less. Food was higher than in Oregon.

Southern Oregon has Mistletoe in trees, but I'm north, so Savannah was my first exposure to Mistletoe in trees. The Spanish Moss was a bit messy at times, but overall, I thought it gave an interesting character to the area's trees.
