I fought with my 056 clutch for about an hour trying to get that last spring in. Whew 3 beers later I finally got it in long nose visegrips a vice and plenty of cursing got the job done but is there an easy way? I though I must be going about this wrong the first two spring went in easy but that last one took it out of me!

Does anyone know if the clutch drum is discontinued for the stihl 056? I tried to order a new one with no luck.

Someone posted pics of a home-made tool not too long ago, maybe Aggie down in Texas. If I remember he said the whole job took just a few minutes using that tool.

There is a cheap tool that stihl sells (just a strong small hook and a big end for pulling). Takes seconds to insert the springs.. Either do it on the saw with a piston stop or in vice.

The clutch drum is still available. Oregon is cheaper. There are two types depending on your oil pump spur gear.

Put the three springs on the shoes, without the center spider. Then slip one side on and use a screwdriver to pry the other two sides out and into place. I didn't have any tool for it and this is what I did the first time and it works for me on this type of clutch. Without the center spider the springs go on without effort because the shoes can come so close together. Mike

Might be tough on an 056.. and it will need to be in a vice, not on the saw -the shoes lock onto the spyder from the back
