Will be a good deal if you can get the parts cheap enough and thats all thats up with it.

I was going to ring the husky dealer here in whangarei to see how much some rings are for it, I don't know if I am right or wrong but is the husky 50 the same as the husky 350? reason I ask this is I know stihl revamped their model numbering system and all that sort of stuff

hope this thing goes well as I need it for my day of carnage next week (got 7 20" logs plus a few bigger and smaller ones to cut up for someone and yes the ps-34 is coming out aswell)

Hi guys just won an auction for another toy this time it is a husqvarna 50 I got it for $155NZD and all it needs is some new piston rings to get the compression right again

link to husky auction

Can't speak to the 50. I got a 51 from a pawn shop $165 US. It was fully operational and is great small saw. Been using it for 5? years now without a hickup and have gone through one chain.

The 50 is a decent saw._Not a "Pro" saw but a serious duty farm and ranch type. Usually re-ringing is all a tired Husky needs.

Thanks for that guys and thanks for the specs link sawtroll it was of a great help now to go and price some rings for it :D

I'm in the same boat as you at the minute Ross. I just bought a job lot; one Stihl 041 AV, one Stihl 08 S and one Husqvarna 50 Rancher. The 041 I've already got running, the 08 S will probably never be resurrected as there's more missing than there is there, but the 50 supposedly only needs rings and looks in good condition for a saw of its age. I have another 50 that I've never yet got to run properly. Always get sidetracked with the next new one!

Anyway I only paid 34 GB for the lot including shipping, so if I get the Rancher going it will be worth it.

Still I think it was a mistake, unless the rest of the saw is in great condition.
With luck, a new ring, or rings will be all that is needed, but you need to find out what burnt the saw up to begin with.

the saw came out in 1985 so I would honestly say that it would be general wear and tear (I hope). I did price up a new ring and cylinder gasket and it came to $41.50NZD so that is not too bad if I want a complete kit with piston etc then it would be $165NZD. but as soon as the saw arrives the cylinder will be coming off for bore and piston inspection to make sure there is no scouring of the bore or damage to the piston, crosses fingers that only a new ring is needed.

The saw arrived today and to my disappointment there is much more wrong with the husky than what the advertisement said about re-ringing

This is what I have found wrong with it
No spark which is the first thing i checked for and I even held the base of the spark plug to purposely get a jolt (spark plug lead is damaged has deep nicks in the lead discovered this after removing electrical tape from the lead) = new coil
The alloy edge at the back of the air filter/carburettor housing smashed off on the right hand side hopefully this won't affect the running of the saw
Fuel tank leaks (dont know if this is fixable)
exhaust gasket non existent
full of muck looks like it has never been cleaned

good points: no scouring to the piston or bore but the compression ring is buggered

currently trying to figure out how to remove the rear handle/ fuel tank section from the engine so I can try to examine the tank (hopefully it may only need a new seal if it is one that can be split in half)

either way I am determined to get the saw going without having to go to a store even if it takes a few months to get it done

I think you're gonna need either some JB weld, or a new tank, these molded plastic ones arent 2 piece tanks like the older magnesium tanks are. for spark, new coil will do it, plus new ring(s) and some cleaing. probably you'll want a new sprocket too.

cheers sawtroll for the IPL I am going to ring the husky agent tomorrow and see if he has any spare tanks for the 50 series by the look of it i will need a whole tank and rear handle assembly (by looking at the IPL the tank and rear handle is one piece). I just wish that the advertiser was abit more honest with the advertisement but i guess that is the way the cookie crumbles but I am thinking this way if i i get it going I got another decent saw

If it's any consolation I took the head of my 50 Rancher today and found it to be pretty scored up. I'm gonna try just a ring 1st, but am probably looking at a full piston and cylinder for it. Just as a couple points on what you've said about yours:

"No spark which is the first thing i checked for and I even held the base of the spark plug to purposely get a jolt (spark plug lead is damaged has deep nicks in the lead discovered this after removing electrical tape from the lead) = new coil
The alloy edge at the back of the air filter/carburettor housing smashed off on the right hand side hopefully this won't affect the running of the saw"

Try a different HT lead before you buy a whole coil, I've found this to be the problem before now and it's certainly a lot cheaper to fix.

What alloy edge? Do you mean the inlet manifold to the cylinder?

the alloy edge I am talking about is the small lip that the bottom rear of the cover sits on , i'll take a pic later to show you what I am talking about

just got the prices for the replacement tank and ht lead and coil unit all up it is going to cost me $380 for a new tank ( no second hand ones available ) and $250 for the coil and HT lead so it looks a if the saw will not be getting rebuilt, so i am going to advertise it as a parts saw.
