Went to the stihl dealer at lunch today to get some pull rope .Decided to ask if they had any used chainsaws to sell .They said they sell used ones pretty fast. So I asked them if they had any broken ones they didnt want. He said I do have one old one we did an estimate on and the guy never picked it up about a year ago Said it didnt run. I said how much he said twenty dollars , and its yours . Ill take it without even looking at it . It was in a few pieces . took it back to work pressure washed it, put it together. Still had some old gas in it from about a year ago, about 7 pulls fired up ran for about a minute than i shut it down. Its a Stihl 056 AV. 24inch bar and chain looks almost like new. Is this one a good one to rebuild if needed or restore. Are parts still available. Info would be appreciated.

LMAO After i started it I thouht (mmmmm) I wonder if they gave me the wrong saw.

I have a few old 56's and i run 66's falling but tinker on the old saws for fun. I needed some rings, oiler gear, and air cleaner for the 56 mag and was able to get them all at the local stihl shop.

I was wondering cause im sure its going to need a few things

You can get all the parts you need on ebay and through baileys. Pray your coil stays good though. They are very hard to find. A few guys on here are restoring them so someone might have what you need. I only paid 20 bucks too! but I need a bar and chain. I have a replacement coil on the way and I might order some fresh paint from stihl to finish the job. The oilers on them have issues so it might need work. If you have any ? just ask.

Nice saw!! Work $250 - $300 out here any day of the week. It's the very first 056 model with the 52mm bore, 81cc, 5.6hp.

Here's my ongoing thread on the my rebuild efforts... More to be added later this week.

NE Wa, EH??!! Welcome to AS....If you're running 66's, you must be in some of that good big Bitterroot/Selkirk timber that I hear is still around!

Let's hear some stories!

Thanks, well I've been trying to post some pictures but no luck yet! I do get into some nice timber. Although whenever i'm cutting on a forest service sale They {FS} leave all the big timber for leave trees and cutt all the small second growth. I'm just a uneducated idiot so i quess there idea is to cut all the small growing trees and Leave the 2'-5' trees that way they can die, fall over, and ROT! Now in 15-25 years whats left to log? Just my two cents on the deal. This winter i asked the FS guy why they had all the big mistletoe infested fir marked for leave trees and he told me {because enviromentalists consider mistletoe a living thing, just part of nature}! Anyway i could rant about this till the cows come home so i'll spare YA.

Check my thread in about a week... there just might be a zip file of tech notes...
I'm pretty sure cheapstihlsawparts has a couple of manuals, but be sure to read it in conjunction with the tech notes as there were a slew of changes over the production life of the 056.

NO!.....it's a heavy old low reving PIG!

If you can get $250 to $300 for it like Lakeside claims, I'd sell in a heartbeat!

Then buy something lighter and newer.

Ah Dennis.. you've lost the feel for old iron...

But he's right... unless you want to "restore it", stump with it or mill with it, sell it on ebay for good money and buy an 044..

Personally, I'm keeping mine (unless I get one hell of an offer!).
