I'm just starting to really pay attention to what I'm cutting. I can tell you what locust,white and red oak, cherry,and what most maples are but still a few I question. Last week I cut some wood up that I'm pretty sure is shagbark hickory but not 100% sure. It's not that im[portant if I burn it in the stove but I would like to use some of it for smoking meat in a smokehouse so I want to be sure it's hickory. It seemed to be a very wet heavy wood. It has a strong smell when cutting it. My dad always said it smelled like a sweaty horse. Not really sure what a sweaty horse smell like. Sorry I only have one picture and this tree was only 12" diameter. I cut a larger one that had very shaggy bark and had the same smell. The center was light colored. I'll try ro get another pic up.
