My FIL wants me to cut this tree down. It's right outside my back door. He said it was "sick". I don't particularly care for the tree and would love to cut it down. But I'd like an expert opinion on the health of the tree.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Adam

difficult

It's very hard too determine issues solely based on pictures. I would contact a local arborist to come and look at it. Contact a local university cooperative extension, they should be able to at least point you in the right direction.

one more pic

PS: can anyone tell me what the tar like goo is that's slowly oozing from the tree?
looks like frozen sap to me but I can't really tell by the picture, was it cold that day or does this look the same everyday?

Is that a Sugar Maple?
I'm going to say yes.

The discoloration on the trunk and laterals raises eyebrows; need more pics/info to make more observations from this armchair  .

Jon in NC it's common for sugar maples to ooze sap from birds etc then fungus discolors the sap.

The biggest problems that tree has are neglect of branches and abuse of roots.

Does your FIL need for firewood or is he getting old or what is his goal here?

he would burn it for heat, but we have acres of land to cut for firewood. I'mm not really sure why he wants it down. I was going to take some better pics yestaerday but by the time I finished my honey-do list it was dark. I'll try to remember when I get home from work. I don't have a desire to take the whole thing down, but I would like to take the branches off our power line.

Good; remember directional pruning is usually better for the tree than whole branch removal.

If you clean up those rotting stubs while you're up there that would be cool. And send your fil Proper Mulching and Tree Values from the link below.

Hey you're near Hertford--I'll be passing by there Thursday. It's a small world after all...

death comes to us all

most fun I've ever had climbing. High winds, a little rain. I'm still getting used to walking out on branches with my life line tied to a higher crotch. No swing/crash this time though. me and the FIL had it down, bucked, and on the trailer in 4.5 hrs.

I used to work the Hertford/E City/Edenton area all the time. Some nice people out that way. As long as you stay away from the "historic district" douche bags.

haha that didn't take you too long to make your mind up on that one! I would have taken it out too...def a problem with the roots, looks like a few major girdling roots and who knows what else.
