I'm probably going up to my old home town for the convention. I was wondering who, on here, is thinking of going. I drove a cab in Chicago for four years, during my undergrad college days, and I still know the city pretty well. At least I think I do. The last time I was there, about seven years ago, most of the very cool ethnic neighborhoods had been "yuppieized" to a sickening extent, but I still found some of my old haunts to be in good shape. I would get a kick out of meeting some of you characters in the flesh, so let me know if you're heading up to The Windy City, this summer.

A tip: The Uno's Pizzerias that you see around the US are NOT the same as the original Uno's and Due's, in Chicago. A new generation of family members went national, and the original family members, who started the restaurants in Chicago, were not for that, although you won't find that info too easily, online. For the best pizza in the world, in the opinion of thousands, if not millions, be sure to check out one or the other. They're a block apart, downtown, and the pizzas are ten times better than those in the Uno's national chain. You may wait an hour, or more, for your table.

I've got many more tips for you, if you're heading to Chicago.

Here's another tip--stay away from the south side. It was rough when I was born there, but now even the cops do not stand still for long in some of those 'hoods.

I'm training to bike the last leg of the Tour des Trees, 84 miles in a day. I got a ways to go...

Get outta here! I'm from South Shore! 73rd and Yates. I go back each time I hit town. I play in the conga drum circle at The Point or The Bend, on SSD.

I graduated from South Shore High. It was 95% white when I entered as a Freshman, and 87% black when I graduated. I had great times there. It was the 60's and all that went with it. As a cab driver out of 51st and Stony Island, I was one of three white guys working there. You either got along or you didn't last. I had great times there, too. Night shift hacking in Chicago was one of my favorite gigs: An adventure each and every night. I actually thought about buying a cab and shield down here in Austin, but I tried driving here when I first moved, and it was so boring as to put me to sleep, literally.
