A tree in the forrest is not a weed, I never said it was, however, a tree in the forrest along the ROW is nothing more and nothing less than a big glorified weed.

If you wanna huge it on my watch, don't forget your helmet.

And if you want to "huge it" on a forum about trees, you will learn how to correctly spell FOREST.

After the children have gone to bed, we can get back to the issue of the ISA prostituting for that which they fight against.

Rural ROW tree aka woody weed--> ANSI 5.9.2.2

Urban/landscape/amenity tree--> ANSI 5.9.2.1

Different sites, different standards.

Is selling books preaching?

ANSI 5.9.2.2

Be careful about quoting ANSI without definition.

After all the following is ANSI 12.1.4.1: A partially bounded opening is considered accessible if any of the conditions outlined in Clauses 12.1.4.2 and 12.1.4.3 exist and when the requirements in Clauses 12.1.4.2 and 12.1.4.3 are met.

Meaningless unless you know it relates to ANSI Z-614-03.

Which leads to my next question: If ANSI has done all the hard work, and an ISA shill such as yourself ends up refering to ANSI, then what is the point of the ISA, EXACTLY?

Yes, I know it's a voluntary membership organization, dedicated to promoting a basic standard, but where is the worth to me?

It's time for the ISA to justify it's existance, and if it takes turning Shigo's words insideout to the point that I puke, don't bother.

I can see the reasons for using the equipment in the right circumstances, and a tree growing in a forest is not a weed, it is in the proper place. A weed is a nuisance as far as I am concerned. Proper practice by utilities has never been considered as far as I can see, I am a "tree hugger" I like doing things the proper way but I will also never get involved in this type of work.

Good luck getting them to pull the ad. I cant wait to see the average tree "care" company using this type of equipment in my neck of the woods. I will be the first on the job site to raize hell...

Until that happens I dont see the harm. Stick to issues like the topping of trees by utilities when there are targets around before going after the "improper/proper" work here.

You are right, a tree growing in the woods is not a weed. But run a tranny line through that woods and suddenly the trees are a serious nuisance.

Proper practice for utilities is to do what it takes to keep the power on. May not be pretty but row trimming does accomplish what it sets out to do.

The isa does seem a bit hypocritical at times. Good posts lxt.

I was talking about the pruning standard, thought that was obvious.

Different sites -> different standards -> no hypocrisy.

Good Grief Charlie Brown...LOL!

You got me on a couple of type-os, congrats. I'm sure you've never made them.

I know how to spell forest. It was past my bedtime. :) Forgive me. I'm sure I probably had "forrest gump" on my mind after reading some of these posts.

“There lots of poor trees along the ROW, Jenny.”

"I like trees, they always been good to me."

Exactly, the ISA is an industry organization run by people from the industry.

The pruning standard in someones yard should be higher then that used out in the middle of nowhere.

I complain about bad tree work, but I complain about the cost of electricity too. I want them to manage the cost reasonably.

An average tree company could not afford to own one, like a bucket, you need contracts to run the thing on a regular basis, meaning row and maybe fire trail contracts. The Giraffe is followed by a brush hog....mile after mile of "mindless" machine operation. (that was hyperbole, you need a skilled operator in both rigs to make money)

The ISA does seem a bit hypocritical at times.

If you would follow what they say, on regular basis, then you would see that they represent more then just the residential climber. One of my many complaints is that we often get lost in the mix of the bigger companies with more influance.

Some treatments do not fit the "tree trimming 101" model that Shigos book excerpts have become. Heck, a lot of Shigo's work is dated, something that the current ISA researchers have built upon.

Hydro, to thier credit, does not accept stubs or flush cuts anywhere

That is good, but a stub is always better then a flush, at least you are not cutting into trunk wood. And with a stub, it may sucker up and prevent scalding of the trunk.

I was not looking for ANSI standards when I asked where does the ISA state ROW proper and improper practice? That is what I am getting at, I havent read the books about utility. So I just wonder if there are standards ?

If there are no set practice standards by the ISA then where is the harm in selling ROW equipment?

People love their trees until they loose power because of them, then that is a serious nuisance.

Funny how that changes ideals...suddenly.

The same people that get bent because you have to get your clearance are the same ones bringing you coffee and donuts in the middle of the night to assist you in taking down that precious tree in the front yard so they can get the lights back on sooner.

"I think I can save it ma'am."

"No, no, don't do that..I never want this to happen again! Take it down!"

Reality changes everything.
