This old gal calls this morning and wants a quote to remove some brush piled up on her property. I tell her I will chip it up for $375.00 and she says too much so I finally come down to $350.00 and she says do it. About 11AM she calls and tells me she beat my price by $1.00 (that is not a typo) and I would have to match that. She gets pissed when I start to laugh at her and I start to tell her to get lost but find myself telling her OK. Two thirty she calls back and wants a senior discount on top of that and I asked her old she is and she says 54 and I tell her she is not really a senior. She said it was worth a try. Fast forward to 5PM and she is calling again threatening me with her getting an "E-LEE-GAL MEX-CAN" to do the job if I didn't come down to $225.00. That's when I lost it.

I had one where I was dealing with a housewife in the midtown area of our city. Very affluent neighborhood with million dollar homes. I had two large jobs coming up the next week and was out on a Friday trying to line up a Saturday job. I was giving them an excellent price because to tell the truth, I was wanting to make sure I would have enough money for payroll the next week. I knew I was likely going to get bogged down on the 2 large jobs plus I was going to have to pay crane rental so I wanted to land this job to make sure I had enough cash to cover my operating expenses for the next week.

The lady was nice enough but her husband was a true prick. I was dealing with her but having to communicate with him through her over the phone. I let the guy talk me down a hundred bucks because I really wanted to do the job and after we agreed to it he called back and said that one of the trees was not worth the price I was charging and wanted me to knock of $75 more. We were already unloaded and I was about to go up one of the trees. I told the guys to pack it up and told the lady to forget about it. I told her that I really didn't need the work that bad and explained that I was trying to make pay roll for the next week. I told her to tell her husband to forget about it. LOl, I was polite but she could tell I was angry. She told me to go ahead and do the work and she would cover the difference with her own cash. She said that she was the one wanting the work done and that her husband was a fool. LOL.

Also had a habib try to renegotiate a price with me onetime after I had already completed the job. I thought I was going to have to go taliban on his ass.

another thing that makes them livid,after they tell you all the stuff they want done,tell them all the stuff you are going to do that is no where close to what they wanted for 10 times what your original qoute was.

My favorite was a couple of years ago standing in a parking lot at 8:30 PM arguing with a lady about the price I gave her for a storm damage job. Got there, told her how much, she got mad, started yelling at me... wouldn't let me leave until I explained to her why she got the price she did.

I recently ran a lead on a duplex, removal of a walnut from a back yard, it was a little over the garage, a little over the house and really crappy asphalt driveway. So I figured that it was rig most of it. Needed all utilities dropped. So i put $900 on it, chip brush to 10 inches and leave wood in log lengths. He calls back and said he was expecting around $500. Work is work, he could find someone to do it for what he wants, so I called a few friends to see if they wanted to look at it. One guy has a lady friend near by, so he took it.

I recently asked a few friends if they knew a carpenter who needed some work, I have some trim work in my dinning room... Guy who has been doing cabinetry for 20 years said he is willing to work for $15 cash. He's well recommended by one of my major clients, and my house is rather dumpy....

I gave a job to a competitor of mine (if you want to call him that) a while back where the HO wanted it $200.00 cheaper than I would do it for. The owner of this other "tree service" has made it public knowledge he just flat out doesn't like me but the guy is in Pizza Hut the week before crying and whining about no work and I was about ready to break out the violin so I figure what the hell and give him the lead. I don't know what happened but he calls me a couple days later cussing and screaming about me setting him up and something about me telling his wife he was a loser and I don't know what all. Now I don't refer anybody. It's not worth it.

Well, to tell the truth it wasn't meant to be used as a racial slur. It was more to convey who I was dealing with. Middle Easterners are shrewd hagglers. Anyone who has dealt with them knows that they love to barter. They come from an economic system where every price is negotiable on all goods, even groceries. The customer I was talking about was a shrewd negotiator. He even wanted to negotiate after the job had been done. It kind of pissed me off but he paid up and all was well. The taliban comment was meant as a joke. Nothing more nothing less.
