All right, this one's really thrown me for a loop. Just started tearing into my new Jonsey 111S. Pulled the muffler and found...the lower piston ring is gone! Now I normally wouldn't be that surprised in a older saw like this, but usually I find most of the missing ring stuck in the piston face and cylinder walls. IE: in a blown saw. The funny thing here is that the bore and piston are as clean as the day it came off the boat. Perfect. No chunks of hardened steel rattling around in there.

Any idea what caused this? Drunk factory worker? Absent-minded shop tech?

John....I thought about doing that very same thing...trying to create that extra bit of power by going to the single ring theory..but the problem with that is, when that ring is missing it creates "freeporting"..therby losing any hp you may gain....so..speaking to Yoda, he suggested a 288 ring to stop the freeporting...and stay tight to the piston...less friction...

Possibly someone was repairing in and couldnt find a replacement? So they went without it...

or a drunken assembly line worker 20 years ago...lol..they do like their beverages over there....I think its the first place I have ever been where they give shots of vodka at 9 am...and beer with every meal...

Interesting. Anyway, are there any simple performance tricks to do while I have this thing open? I don't think I want to get into porting yet. The muffler's welded shut, so it doesn't look like I'll be doing much to it.

Thanks

John..yeah that muffler is alot of fun...lol..took about 2 hours...tig welder...small plasma cutter...and some parts from another muffler...but we did get the insides removed and an extra "stock port" built....all back together and noone is the wiser..:) If you dont want to get into porting and machining..there isnt much else to do....i am going to be cutting with it again next week when Robert gets here...
