You were told how to start it. Common issue an most every MS250. Start with the piston too low and it will jerk it out of your hand. Is it timing, is it compression, is it the recoil design. Could be all of the above. No cures. Start it with the piston near top and pull it like you mean it.
Not a saw for the weal and slow of arm.
Get an easy start.
Now, can we get back to oil

There is an engineering reason for the hard pull of the 025 and MS250. The 021 was introduced in 1993, and the 023 the next year, followed by the 025 a year later. They had compression of about 140-150, 140-160, and 150-170 respectively. The 017 as well as the 021-025 use the SAME starter pulley (rope rotor) part #1123 195 0400, although the displacement and compression of the 025 is higher than the others. Since the moment arm is the same, the required force is highest in the 025, and it has a well deserved reputation of being much harder to pull over than other saws in its size range. I guess using a larger pulley was too much of a production change to be considered.

We get lots of these complaints here about the MS250, 025, etc. being hard to pull. Maybe that's why Stihl five years ago brought out the EZ start device that gives you a spring assist. My 251c has it, and it works. I bought mine from its late owner whose widow sold it to me. It's the only saw I have with a mechanical assist like that. Most bigger saws assist you with a decompression valve instead.

I have stihl ms290 "hard to pull". My question is, can I replace the original start with the EZ Start system?

Not that I know of unless somebody other than Stihl is selling it custom made. I used to upgrade 290s with 390 top ends. The 390 decompression valve solved the hard-pull problem.
