John Deer V70

My brother-in-law pulled an old Green John Deer V70 out of the Dump and got it running with fresh fuel mix. It runs very well as a matter of fact. Original Fuel mix on the fuel cap lists 20:1.

My question is what Bar will fit this old Saw? He curently has an Oregon Bar, but the Automatic Oiler hole does not line up with the Oil hole in the Bar. He uses the Manual Oiler to get oil on the chain.

Does anyone have info in the cc's of this saw? I cut with it and the saw has plenty of low end grunt but it's not a high rever. The saw reminded me of my fathers old Stihl 041.

Are you sure it's not a 70V rather than a V70? If it's a 70V then it uses the D176 mount and bars are available but it'd not a very common mount pattern. Some recent Poulan Pro models use it as well as the bigger Echos. Any decent saw shop should be able to set you up with a bar/chain to suit your needs.

Yes, you are correct, it is a model 70 V. I will attempt to modify the existing bar with my Dremel and Drill. If that fails, at least there are still Bars avalible that will correctly fit this old Saw.

The fuel mix ratio says 20:1. I assume this was for SAE 30 wt. oil, since it is so old. What would be a safe mix ratio for 2 cycle oil?

Any idea how many cc's it is?

I'd run it at 32 or 40 to 1 with modern 2 stroke oil.

I'll agree with you on this one RockyJSquirrel. If the saw revs to a lower top RPM the lubrication requirements should be less than todays 346XP at 14.500 Revs a minute. I figure that the JD you have is a rugged old machine, If its a JD it should be a good product to have. I'll stihl take my Stihl saws over an older JD for quality, or I'll run a husky too, the two best brands out there today. If you keep that JD 70V running you will have a great saw for years to come. OH yeah the engine displacement is 4.31 CID or 70.7CCs the bore is 50MM and a 36MM stroke carb is Tillotson HS54BB the recommended plug for this saw is an NGK BM6A. I hope this helps some.
