Rich- the 2186 has been getting mixed reviews. I had a 2083 that had been worked over by a builder and it was so-so. I would recommend sticking with the 385 if you need something in that size class and have it worked over by one of our resident builders. Or better yet, a Dolmar 7900 at a few less cc's and a few less pounds too.

Hey JJ, Rich already has atleast one 7900 and now he`s looking for a 2186. Hmmm.....? Guess there ain`t no replacement for displacement after all.

I know that the 7900 is a sweet saw and is greatly talked up here, but in my opinion it won`t quite cut with a 385 when both are stock. BTW, I`ve got a 385 and have had ample opportunity to buy 7900s at great prices. I will someday for the reasons that you have mentioned, excellent output for the weight.

Russ,
A case of cold ones?

So, what's the diff between the 2186 and the 385?

I mean other than color and no option of big air filter like the husky has? I thought they were the same saw.

I bet there's more than a chance that Jonsered never will...that is the Jonsered folks back in Sweden.

I asked an old Jonsered dealer about that once, when I was buying my 670, years ago...he could order and get a "west coast" saw, but it amounted to a large aftermarket filter, and a hole in the top cover to suit. Just wasn't worth the extra money he'd have to have, against a saw off the store shelf. He believed that the optoin was at the behest of N. American distributors, not intended by Jonsered.

I've also heard here and out in the real world that Elux is bound by contract to continue to supply N. American distributors with product, and that kinda bugs Elux...they'd rather have undiluted access to the market with a single product line.

So, Elux is probably not in any hurry to offer the goodies to extend a basic saw into broader markets. If N. American dealers aren't able to compete, well, it's not like Elux is gonna worry too much.

The 2186 has become the saw that loggers in this small town want to try. It is sized about right for the hardwood we have around here. They have been holding up well. All that I have sold are running 24 inch bars, full comp chisel chain.

The comparison of a 2083 to a 2186 is not relevant, different size machines, different design origins, and several years different in evolution. But the 2083 II remains a good saw.
