I am putting new seals in the 490 and I remember reading that the gear has to come off to do the clutch side. I know the information is already on the site, but I can't seem to find it.

Does the gear press off or screw off? Clockwise or counterclockwise. Was there a tool involved? Do I take it to a dealer and not mess with it?

if its new enough--and i am fam with oly--and some jons--after the clutch is off--it may be that the oiler gear has internal splines--to fit the internal part of the clutch--and external threads--to dirve the oiler---

The IPL doesn't show any splines on the crank. I have it out now and am trying to remove the gear. I am thinking it must press on and off, so I am trying a little heat and am using the crank bearing to tap against the gear. Hopefully, I don't break anything, but I know where I can get another gear.

threaded gear

that part # is for a right hand threaded puller, some 490/590 models had a left hand thread, puller # 502540102.

Well, before I read these threads, I was out trying to take off the bearings and the gear. I used some heat(with a very cold crank) and they both slid off the crank. I don't see any threads to put the gear back on with. I assume if it came off without breaking and the crank is smooth where it installs, that I should be able to use a little heat to put it back on. Maybe my saw is different(earlier version??)?

This was the thread I was looking for, but I tried Partner 500 and Jonsered 490 without any luck. Thanks, Cut4fun!
