490's are closed port, open window design pistons, 490 and partner 5000 is the same. partner 500 will work too, but is open port, closed piston design. In a stock saw, I dont think you will tell much difference imo.
Start looking used market. I have only seen 2 new pistons come around in the last year.

I got a feeling we will be seeing aftermarket 490 and 5000 Cylinders and pistons in the next year or so.

That would be nice. What I'd like to see is aftermarket centrecase gaskets. My dealer tried to order one(jred) for the 5000 and the number showed good but it came back no longer available.I ended up making one. What a pain in the a$$

Last complete gasket kit i seen was last year, i past on it, before i knew also that it couldnt be ordered. :buttkick:

I happen to have a crankcase gasket for the 490, but I plan to use it myself. I just finished making one for another 920 that I am working on. Sure, it isn't as pretty as the original, but it works just as good. I can do a crankcase gasket in about 10 minutes. I just use a real small ball peen hammer and decent gasket material.

What do you mean? is somebody going to start making them? or is there a secret stash somewhere that is about to be exposed? You would think there would be tons of parts for these things sitting in dusty boxes in back rooms of former Jred dealers.

I think there's a guy in Ohio with a secret stash:biggrinbounce2: but failing that, look for replacement parts out of China.Possibly not the ideal but better than no parts at all.

So what are you saying bama?A Corn Flakes box isn't real good gasket material? :D

I get the best results from Corn Chex.:yoyo:

Seriously, I had to scratch together a new carb gasket for a 621 while I was cutting years ago. All I had was a Wheat Thins box. It held until I got home to make a real one. I used a pocket knife and it was real rough.

Gasket paper is the ideal as it is a tighter material but as long as your surfaces are true, once under compression, the corn flakes(or chex) material will never leak.Just don't tell anyone what you did:taped: :laugh:I also use a thin coat of loctite flange sealant on each side. It's not silicone but is a superior sealant for things like this.
