Jonsered 820, listed as ported for more and better power for $265 w/ shipping. Got it buy it now and expecting it this week. Sounded like a very good deal to me so I did a short search here and bought it without asking any ?'s because I figured it wouldn't last long at the price.
Didn't find a lot here doing a search. Would like to hear some more about that model from folks that owned them. Looks to me they would compare well with the 056 stihl . Pro's and con's, any info or opinions about the 820 will be appreciated.

I think you did pretty good, depending on the quality of the porting job. Should last a long time if it was only used for firewood.

I have never run the 820, but I like my 920. A little heavy for the power, but still a good saw. Make sure to clean that filter with soap and water and some compressed air, instead of caustic cleaners. The filters are NLA and are hard to come by. If the top end ever goes, you can slap a 920 p/c on it, but you have to find the cylinder, first. There is an aftermarket piston for the 920, but not the 820(to my knowledge, anyway).

820 is a fun saw to run thru big wood. Slower top rpm than newer saws, but has lots of torque. Reliable, rugged. Little on the heavy side. 40:1 og works good esp in warmer weather. Good buy at 265. Mike Acres site has specs.

That's the first saw that I ever bought. It's a 80.7cc hunk of power.

.... someday I'll have me another.

EDIT: Corrected my cc rating error (thanks Ray!)

I think you could have done better, and I would not have paid that much for a 20+ year old saw. Anyone with a dremel and time can port a saw, doesn't mean it is a good job though.

The 820 wasn't that popular of a saw, and most 920's go for about that much or less. I think $175-200 would have been more appropriate. That's just me though.

Fill in the blank:

820 to 920 is like 630 to ______

Really? From who? I have a super clean 920 jug with no piston.

I know they are not like OEM for quality, but I have used Golf pistons on the 920. I am running one in one of my saws. Haven't checked about other brands of aftermarket. I have used it for a couple years with no trouble, but I am not a commercial user.

I read that description such that the cylinder is not modded. He's talking about the factory porting being different to make it an "Ace".

Brad, are you saying that you don't think it is modded? The way I read it, one could infer that some port work was done. No way to know how much without pulling the p/c. What one person calls ported, another may just call polished.
