It seems that my new-to-me Jred 920 might need more than just an air filter cover. Hopefully I'll be posting a couple of photos that show some scouring on the intake/carb side of the piston. My ? fow now (additional ?s to follow) is, can this be salvaged?

I should mention the exhaust side of the piston is clean (a bit of a lip on the top of the piston), & the jug is clean. Prior to tear down saw seemed to have good compression.

All advice & comments appreciated!~~~Chris J.

Okay, 40 views & no replies. I did some cleanup & polishing today, as if anyone cares. Does anyone care???
I wish I could help you out Knot Whole but you know I already gave my 910 away, I wish it would have had a good engine in it, I was wanting a larger cc saw but it didn't work out, That and I have always wanted to try out the red saws, I keep looking for a nice 670 but those are just getting hard for find now.

Piston looks okay to me. What little scoring on the skirt of the piston should not be a problem. What was the compression before you tore it down, or did you check it with a gage? If it had good compression and it was mine ,I would give it a lite honing to break the glaze on the jug and put it back together. I would try that before I would buy a new piston. I got a price for a new piston for a Jonsered 630 and it was $85.00.

you might get away with honing and a set of rings and polish out the piston if there are no major scratches
good luck

Thank you to Lostone, Calh, & Superman 36 for your responses.

The saw seemed to have good compression. I don't have a gauge yet (it's on my wish list, as is a pressure tester), but it passed the saw-and-recoil test. I managed to polish out most of the scoring, but I'm also trying not to get carried away. Once I get it reassembled I'll know more. The amount of carbon build-up in the exhaust port was incredible; makes me wonder what mix ratio the previous owner(s) ran.

Lostone, Madsaw is going to send an air filter cover. I think that it's from the 920 that you sent to him.

CalH, when I was checking prices for a P&C kit for a 670 the cheapest I saw new was $230.00 . I now have a couple of 670 parts saws.

Aw ra best!~~~Chris J.

Awhile back there was a brand-new J-red 670 on Ebay with a Buy it Now of 300. Chris B.
   If I had seen that it would have been mine. But if I was being reasonable with myself (never happens) I would probably just get an 044 (440) because of the ease of getting parts for them rather than a 670.

I was watching a Husky 268XP on eBayware, & it went for $136.00 + $20.00 shipping. Augh!!! And Stihl MS170s are fetching over $200.00; go figure.

Chris, that NOS 670 was a steal at $300.00. I'm hoping to repair & add two more runners to my collection.

I never run into good price saws for some reason, I would be happy if I could get just one good buy on one, well one that is repairable for a decent price that is.

My 670 was a Buy It Now along with an unidentified older Jred. I paid about $205.00 total for the 670 & a 801. That is probably the only real 'deal' I've gotten via eBayware.

Once I get some cylinder gaskets I'll reassemble the 920 & try it out.
