Someone dropped off (most of) a Jonsereds 52e a while ago and I started looking it over today. All but 2 plastic flywheel fins are broken off, stop switch is gone, and the recoil spring is broken and rusty. At the moment there is no spark but I haven't done anything with it to try and track down why.

I know I can come up with a replacement for the spring (just rework one from another saw), I can probably come up with a replacement for the switch if I have to, but what about the plastic flywheel fins? I see at least one all aluminum one on eBay that says it fits a range of models, is this a possibility?

In addition, I was reminded of a 521 in the attic with a bad h heater switch. Any idea of a Part Number for the switch and is there any possibility of finding a working one?

Nope all aluminum 49 fan won’t work. Nor will the 521 as that’s a totally different ing system as well. The only three choices are that will work on the 52e is the stock 52e ign, or, if you can locate the parts, convert it back to a points model 52. The SEM under the flywheel is the usual ignition failure on the 52e. The metal flywheel core and SEM will work from a 70e but they are about as hard to find as the 52e parts.
The two places that give trouble on these that can be fixed easily is the spark plug spring connector inside the plug boot and the coil connection between the engine case and the recoil cover. Be certain this connection is clean and making contact. If you can get fire I’ll send you a 52 plastic fan!
The recoil spring is about the only thing besides the spark plug you can buy new for these old saws

Mark,
There is a guy on AS who was 3D printing the 70e's plastic fan with great success. He was using his company's expensive printer with their full permission. I can't speak for him as to whether he would print this or not. There's time to set up the machine for the first unit, etc.

Don't know if another model's aluminum fan can fit on the 52e.......this has probably been discussed before somewhere.

Switches are out there, but mostly used. The heater switches have a bad reputation for failure, especially when using them on high.

Hey Mark, I have a parts 52e with an intact flywheel/fan unit.
AND, look at what else I dug out of the archives-still in the package.

Wow...just saw this! Nothing like members helping members with this old stuff!! Pay it forward.....

The steel flywheel core is the same 52e or 70e but the bolt on plastic fan is much larger on the 70 e......the late model 70 e had an aluminum fan and a cyl mounted coil and no SEM type unit

Yeah, that's why I said the guy would have to set up the printer for the first plastic fan unit and that takes some time and a donor fan. Even if it has mostly broken fins, the computer program can extrapolate the rest of the fins. Mark says a few remain...so it can be done. But at what cost .......cost only comes down if there are others interested in the same thing.

I had a machine shop guy here that could make full-wrap handles for about any saw model that had them. The first one was like $900 and then "The price would come down." You can guess the outcome of that offer......

I know about the 70e's early & late model flywheel setup. The SEMs are problematic under the flywheel....same in Husky. Lots of good saws thrown away or lingering in junk bins over this issue. They did come out with a reissue SEM for the Husky 2100 because of the interest. Don't think they ever did that with the 70e.

There's a thread on AS where a EE removed the necessary potting on a failed Stihl SEM and connected a pulse fire capacitor externally to the flywheel. Going with the theory that heat kills the under flywheel SEMs. Worked...pretty involved, but saves a saw at least from eternal damnation..
