Cody and I started out the day spliiting firewood but finished up on a road project. We pick up a water trailer and ended up helping to build a water bar on a seldom used park road. We wetted and mixed base rock and poured cement powder on to bind it all together. The excavator contractor did most of the work and was a master using a plate compactor to form the water bar.

Anyway that has nothing to do with this thread. This pine was hanging onto the hillside despite the road having been built when it was just a pup. I have always heard there is as much tree under ground as above ground but heck, I don't know if that is true or not. This pine has some sizeable roots showing so it might be true. I like this image (from my i-phone).

I don't know about that as much below as above thing either. I think at least in this case the roots are beefed up to help support the downhill side. I bet it's got some pretty massive roots on the uphill side too. I've seen some on level ground that had crap for a root system when they got blown over. Especially in RMZ's where they aren't windfirm and I personally believe have a lesser root system as a result. The ones left for wildlife trees out in clearcuts don't count most of the time as they usually have something wrong with them hence being the sacraficial goat.

Good pic and interesting topic!
