So i bought an ebay lot about a month ago for $65, consisted of a Macmini 130, a Solo 620AV and a Stihl 024AV.

As much as ive wanted a stihl to play with at some point in my life, it was the Solo i hold the most affection for as i have one already and now i have 2, and they dont come up that often :) - its the ugliest machine but cuts with the best of the german saws of its age. These were all bought sold as seen, and the parts on the solo are worth more than what i paid alone. Anyway this is where the headache starts, or should i say dilema, none of these saws work, and in stripping them down have come across some previous repairs / bad workmanship under the covers. i should note, both the solo / stihl work with fuel straight in the carb. I'll start with the Stihl and then talk about the others and maybe people can help. :bowdown:

Stihl 024av

So i wrote to Stihl to ask some information on the saw, they were helpful in providing a user manual but less helpful telling me when it was manufactured, the serial number is 120768226 - i think it might be from 1984 if im reading some of the parts date stamps correctly, can anyone help to decipher the serial number?

so the problem with it, is it doesnt start :) - i think its the carb - so have a carb kit on order, its the walbro carb, and actually looks pretty clean, but suspect a lazy diaphragm. have replaced the ribbed fuel line too just in case, i tried with some clear fuel line and its pulling the fuel in and the spark / compression seems ok, need to measure properly before i go any further, but help identifying the age would be useful. have attached a couple of pics of all 3. i'll explain the solo woes at a later date .

As a preliminary on the Stihl 024. Take the muffler cover off and make sure its not scored. Always my first check.

Also on the 024 you'd be better off to buy the Stihl line (on this side it is less than $10.00). You should be able to look at the plug after you've pulled several times to make sure that it is wet -- you'll know for sure it is pumping.

Having the Walbro carb on these is a plus-plus in my opinion. The Tillotson's can sometimes be a pistol (don't ask me how I know). Otherwise how does the air filter look? The air filters on these saws have a choke mechanism inside the filter. It's a tiny spring and a flap that works when you engage the control switch. I purchased an 024 last year a guy could not get to run -- the spring inside the filter had come loose. Amazingly that was all that was wrong with the saw.

Thanks for the heads up i'll have a look this weekend, the muffler is heavily oiled suggesting a rich previous life - am trying it with a 32:1 currently as my base for getting any of my saws going (my poulan prefers it), but i suspect it will run up at 40:1 quite happily. i have bought a stihl fuel line, not an after market one its the straight ribbed pipe on this model as opposed to the S shaped one. and tbh, i havent pulled the carb apart yet apart from giving the outer a blast with the air gun. As you ask the air filter is fully functioning, the whole start/stop/choke switch seems flimsy but works as it should and does engage the flap on the air filter at full choke. i also need to get the correct compression barrel for the test, am using a car compression guage with a push in adaptor and its crap :)
 
Be careful about blasting inside the carb with the air hose. It can ruin your walbro. If it's not scored -- and this was my saw, I'd go through the fuel system completely.

(1). Replace the fuel line and filter (done)
(2). Replace the impulse line (very cheap here)
(3). Clean and rebuild the carb.
(4). Clean out the tank vent as a precaution.
(5). Lightly seat the adjustment screws in the carb, the back out one full turn and attempt to crank. Adjust the carb from there.

thanks again from the tips, i learnt the hard way about using the air gun on carbs on another saw a few years ago, never ran the same afterwards, i was just giving the stihl a good surface clean in prep for rebuild, all being well of course, will try and take a pic from inside the muffler port this weekend, and hopefully a compression reading later in the week.

Ah the impulse line that is the one i replaced, does that fuel line have a specific part number? i see it seats under the carb and runs off into the body, its a tight fit

There are 2 part numbers on the IPL. Take yours out and take it in to the dealer to make sure you get the right one. One of them is a formed fitted line, the other is a straight type.

So i took the muffler off and inspected the piston and it actually looked pretty good, in fact no scratches whatsoever, i was a little worried about how oiled the muffler was and the surrounding area as you can see in the picture

So my new comp tester arrived and fired it up straight away on the stihl and she blew 180 and then 185, have a big smile that I haven't bought a turkey :), ran similar tests on my everyday saws, solo/Poulan too just to check the gauge wasn't faulty images attached

Must put my glasses on looks like 190 then 192 :) and before you ask that's from cold as its in pieces on my bench
