that big rock north of the US eh?
ok heres the deal, my grandpa just gave me a jonsered 520 sp and all he said was it wasn't running. This is my first chainsaw and have never taken one apart before. theres spark when i pull it over and the air cleaner is fine, so where should i start? is there any links with cut-downs, or online manuals? also did this model (it looks kinda old) have a safty bar? so if it kicked up it doesn't get me in the head, because there isn't one on there now. i want to use it this weekend to cut my snowmobile trails, but if i can't get it running i'll borow one of my grandpas.

thanks,

fuel supply issue? May need a carburator rebuild. Try a teaspoon of fuel mix directly in the cyllinder via the spark plug hole, replace plug see if it will fire.

theres a MASSIVE wealth of information on how you can check, one system at a time on here. all you gotta do, is search for it. eliminate the systems one at a time, fuel, ignition, compression, and so on.

Try this link for an IPL. I can't recall if they list the 520, and I might not have the link right. Unfortunately I can't access it properly to check it. If the saw will run with fuel squirted in through the spark plug whole, but won't run pulling fuel from the tank, start with the fuel filter. That's about one the cheapest saw repairs known.

Was it stored for a long time with sawgas in it? If so you can dump the old gas, take out the plug....crank the saw...spray some new (40:1 mix of gas:2 cycle oil made for air cooled engines) into the carb...replace the plug with a new one...crank again...if it does not pop, spray some more...and you will know in the first 2-3 pulls if it wants to run. If it pops and tries to run..repeat...it just runs for a second and quits each time you have bigger problems.

i just went outside and started it but it was running really rough. i think the carb needs cleaning because it was bogging really badly. but if i pulled out the choke it ran much better. without the choke though, whenever i hit the throttle it would just bogg, then if i did get the chain spinning when i realeased the throttle it would stall. and the thing has compression like crazy, or maybe i'm just not used to it.

try spraying some carburettor cleaner into the carb and see if that helps it any but be prepared to possibly rekit the carb as there may be parts in there that could require replacing also get a new fuel line and filter

Its a no brainer! In my opinion if i get a saw that has been sitting the quikest fix is a seven dollar carb kit. I will re build carb. before I do anything. The fiber material in the carb. does not hold up to old gas.
Try carb. rebuild, new plug, fresh gas and a prayer. If saw still does not run, list on e-bay and one of us idiots will buy and put rings, seals, and gaskets and make it run.
