Any of you guys in the upstate area of NY, Ballston Spa to be exact, I just got the call from the parents that "The maple" needs to come down. I realize they tend to exaggerate so it will probably wait til spring, but I would rather not roll the 5 hour trip with my gear. I will drop it but will need it chipped and stump ground. Unless of course I can find a good carver for the trunk. Always wanted to start doing that.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.

I'm about 1.5 hours south. A little far. But I'm sure someone is closer? Why does it need to go?

Well there were four or five I recall as a kid all within 75-100 ft of each other, competition may have contributed but not likely. They are, or shall I say were, beautiful sugars that I think have just hit their peak. The neighbor had someone in with a crane last year to remove two on his property. I talked them into keeping the one remaining they had. I did a quick deadwood prune while I was there, but without my gear it was basically useless. I think a quality pruning would help, but they're (my parents) are getting on in their days and are worried.

I've got at least a couple months to put it all together.

Sugar maples and salt do not mix. I see it here all the time, roadside decline due to salt on the road. Older trees are most susceptable. May be the cause if near the road or driveway where salt is applied. Mine are starting to fade on the roadside, especially the one closest to the road.
