Nails, that is the helmet i was talking about.

it's the only one i have seen that looks like it would make a difference.i'm not wearing it in the tree though.

i'm the biggest nag out there about hearing protection.i notice a loss of hearing from my younger days.i try to tell guys but it's their choice.i try to wear it in the tree if i can but i agree.you need to have all your senses wide open in the tree.

i think alot of guys wear PPE for image as well.i think it has it's place but still think it should be a choice.

i wear glasses.

it's a pain in the tree.i have had them knocked off more times than i can count.it sucks because i cannot see worth a damn without them.i have to wait for the ground guys to find them and send them back up.i need to get a strap i know.

as for a hat,i don't wear anything on my head in the air.i'm not fighting any more than i have to up there.

someone else said i was worried about my hair.i don't think so.i could careless what the birds and squirrels think about my hair.

I have all the PPE for my men & myself, But I always have to tell them to wear it!! I consider my team to be very good as do others(competitors), heres what I hear & there is merit to it:

Theres a No Helmet Law for Motocycles!!, yeah you issued it to me...but I dont want to wear that, what?.. like this is gonna stop me from a serious injury!! so & so on.

I think they like to push my buttons, they end up wearing it & all is well...but there are some good reasons & just some foolish comparisons!!

What I hear alot & it comes from my part timer who works for the utility as a Utility Transmission Lineman is: Buddy, we free climb "Its Required"...we dont use fall arrest!!!....tied in twice...for what?, were barely tied in at all.

Now he understands the way things are classified & regulations & all....but some valid points can be made!! I will usually let someone who is chipping brush get away with out wearing a hard hat...as long as the operator doesnt go in the drop zone, safety galsses & hearing protection always!!!

In some ways I agree & others I dont, do it the safest most productive way possible, If OSHA, drove through any town on any given day in my area they wouldnt have enough paper to write citations!! Just roofers & home builders alone!!!!

Be Safe Take Care & do it the best ya can!!

Why do you think Petzl helmets are a joke?

They are designed for top and side impact, they have no brim so you CAN see when looking up, the strap is super comfortable and secure, they have good ventilation for those of us in the tropics, the plastic is thicker and stronger than all the other helmets I have used, at least three kinds, can't name them all...
My groundie curses all the time when the construction style helmet he wears keeps falling off when he looks up...going to get him a Petzl with a strap!

As for the comment that was made when someone got struck...

"when i worked as a plumbing welder/machine rigger we wore helmets and a guy was almost killed by an 8 inch pipe flange that fell of an air handler.no one felt the hard hat did anything.it shattered like thin glass.he still got pretty messed up."

What on earth condition do you think he would have been in if he had NOT been wearing a helmet????
Helmets are designed to be destroyed when dealt a hard blow, rather the helmet than your head!

There is a picture in one of the PPE/chaps threads in the chainsaw forum, a Stihl forestry style helmet in about sixteen pieces...6" chunk swung and struck the guy in the head...he got concussion and a hurt shoulder, helmet destroyed = brain intact, he went home in one piece!

Ok, finished now.

they don'y look like mutch to me.

don't feel like it either.if you like 'em,wear 'em.i'm not wearin' it at gunpoint plain and simple.

as for that pipe flange, the docs said the hardhat made no difference.guy would have been messed up either way.

The guy would have died had he not had the helmet on when the flange struck, but the skull would've exploded like my 30-06 goin thru a f****n melon if he had not been wearin the thing. More power to ya hornet. I hope and pray we never read about you or anyone being violently struck on the head by any object while not wearin your grape cover. But, we're all entitled to an opinion ya know, so just be safe guys!!!

at times a helmet impairs my vision.i also can see a limb getting caught on the edge of the helmet. and i like to see what is going on,even out of the corner of my eye.

i think if a person takes the extra time and plans things properly they would be a lot safer.

If a person takes the extra time and plans things properly, limbs won't get caught on the edge of the helmet.

Personally, i love my hardhat. Has saved me from headaches when i didn't take the extra time to plan things properly. Hate the chin straps though. I usually wear mine with the muffs down all the time. Keeps the helmet on even if i'm upside down, keeps my ears warm in winter, and i'm a bit of a hearing protection freak since i lost half my hearing in an accident as a kid-can't afford to lose anymore. Now i can't stand a face shield in a tree-always glasses for me. I chew gum like crazy and am always getting sawdust in my mouth while chomping-i go to spit and forget to lift the face shield. :D

Even with one tie-in you are often one hand on the tree, TIP and you can have 2 hands for your work, I can get into some pretty odd angles and work comfortably with both hands using rope and flip-line.

When training people who think they can climb, I show what I can do so the can see that they can become better then they already are. If a cripple old man can do this, what can your young but aspire to an a few years.

Don't do the same old thing year after year, improve yourself in your profession, vocation, or even weekend job.

My full brim silver alum. skullbucket with ratchet suspension ,safety glasses and foam earplugs is gospel to me. After 34 years of wearing head, eye, leg, toe and hearing protection I would feel naked without it.
