It looked like we had a window between rains so I called a friend and suggested going on a hike up Kraus Ridge. A lot of it was logged--I recall 3 yarders high leading in one unit during the 80s. Then the owl shutdown kicked in. Here's some pictures. The Used Dog, who was the beer carrier went lame. He got hung up on some limbs while crawling under a blowdown and was almost three legged after that. We fed him dog biscuits, and we drank the beers and then turned around and very slowly walked back out. Poor fellow. I've medicated him with aspirin and he's resting.
There's lots of these punkins still around. This is a Doug-fir.
We had to check this out. From a distance it looked like a lightning scar. Then we saw it was a crack--the tree was splitting.
This was the culprit. Schwinitsii? Or easier to remember--Cowpie Conk. I believe we used to cull the first 16 feet of the tree when this was encountered.
A closer look.
Letting the beers settle a bit and cheering up the lame Used Dog.
