Hey I'm new to the page and have been trawling old threads for info but all of the pics have expired. Can anybody help me out with a few pics and tips for a build or even I'm more than happy to pay for a set of plans if any exist. I'm on my way to collecting bits and have a pair of 50kg flywheels waiting to machine. Any benefit to going heavier? Thanks in advance

Welcome to the site. I think you will find this video interesting. However, only you can decide if it's worth while to build it instead of buying a name brand. Personally, I would build it if I had all the tools. This thing looks robust.

Cheers for the vid link. We don't have any good brands like the ss or dr down here in newzealand just a couple of nasty Chinese copies. I work in a good sized machine shop so that parts not an issue but I just want to gather as much info as I can so I only have to make it once with no mods hopefully.
Thanks

True, I do have a tendency to over engineer my projects so it most likely will be on the hefty side. I've got plenty of flywheel options from gas cut biscuits at a local factory but not many rack options and I don't have the time to machine one at this stage. I'm thinking of trying a duplex chain laying on a machined body and held in place with dowels in the chain link holes. This may work, it may not but it's an easily replaceable part if you have a failure

The guy in the video gives a part number and source for the rack and pinion. I've machined and treated my own for a bench top press before but wouldn't advise it for a splitter. I believe the guy gives enough info to replicate his splitter and if you run into an issue you could try contacting him for more info. Let us know how it works for you.

Not a massive difference between weights on the different models then. I see lots of the home made versions are around the 100 lb Mark
