I have seen the odd picture posted with a KN repacing the stock filter.

Checking KN reference chart it looks like a RC0981 filter with a bit of modification might come close to fitting a stihl 066.

RC 1820, Rc 2450 are also tapered 3x4 by 2 3/4 inch high filters that I thought were posabilities.

It looks as if cutting off the flange from the filter and using a soft rubber seal between the filter and the saw should work.

Has any one tried this, what filter did you use?

Thanks

It seems at least any Stihl filters 3 of them (2 different styles) I have tried I have had problems with crap getting in past the filter.

Maybe the problem is with the filter mating plate on the saw, warped, off spec, or else something in the tightening mechanisum not applying sufficient or even preasure. However I have looked at this and the only problem area I can see is the plastic construction and hard rubber sealing ridges on the stihl filter.

I could make an itermediate gasket out of a softer rubber to make a better fit with the stock filter and that might solve the problem.

But I wondered at how much the stock intake and filter was restricting flow. Just made a KN adjustment to a jeep intake and picked up a pecievable preformance change with an undenigable increase in fuel milage. The preformance gain I could dismiss, maybe it just sounded better and I wanted to believe it ran better. But saving 2 mpg on hiway driving ment something.

Maybe the KN lets more particulate in especialy if it is not maintained, but just how much does a stihl filter let in? Furthermore if you can't get the stock filter to seal properly it realy does not matter how well it's filter element works.

The saw has only been modified on the exhaust end.

A bunch of text deleated, responce to a post that was ether deleated by the poster or a moderator.

Amazingly Ben, somehow my 670 hasnt self destructed in the 2 years I have used a K/N

I used a K&N on my V45 Interceptor back in the 80's and liked it very much. I don't know whether Ben is "right" or "wrong" in his viewpoint on them (and I don't care enough to do the research at this time), but I do know that on my 2-stroke tools I'd rather suffer from performance envy than rebuild envy.

Looks like I missed a little something between TW's two posts. Did somebody barge in, make a ruckus, then leave and take their post with them? I hate that. A person ought to leave what they said "out there".
