What knot should I use around a thimble to tie off to a rope snap? Aka a dead end knot. It is for my buckstrap if that helps at all..

I like the D. Fishermans Knot and the Anchor Bend. The anchor bend is easier to tie and a solid knot!

The fisheman's and scaffold are variants of the overhand knot. Some would say that the fishermans is a 2 turn overhand where the scaffold is a three turn overhand.

I prefer this to the anchor, buntline or others because it is compact and tails back up the rope. It also falls apart easily with carabiners.

the sml eye splice

i like 7/16 rope on my long line but for my lanyard i use 1/2 Sampson blue stk because it can be hand spliced on both ends. i never use thimble's.,but i do like Sherill's rubber bands to keep in place. i use a small non locking krab on the tail end. that gives me more options and will act as a stopper. here is a small list of uses:
1.mutter hitch
2.pole snap
3.redirect with added sling
4.false crotch with added sling
5.saw pinch
6.zip line w/sling
this list could go on n on

+2 but if boston bull recommends something there would be no shame in trying it. He has helped me tons in learning better how to do tree work.
Jared

not to break your balls bostonbull but are you a full time tree guy? how long you been climbing to start instructing?

the reason i said to use the scaffold knot is because he will not be breaking that knot very often, especially if is deadending it for lanyard purposes.

my 2 cents. and giving it whether wanted or not.

Splice it!

The double fishermans is the second best thing, even if you won't be untying the knot.

A spliced end is best! It's easier to detach / reattach and doesn't leave a rope tail flopping around.

Here we go again. Yes full time for almost 3 years, 2 as a foreman, Mass. Certified Arborist, and a Stihl Silver tech. Not bad for just three years huh?
Previous.....
5+ years as a lineman. 4.5 climbing, 3 as a foreman, 2 as safety officer to 2500 employees of Nstar......including the CDL training and head of the CLIMBER training program.
I feel I am qualified to give advice on climbing, you?

As for instructing people, how many of us are actually qualified, certified, training instructors? We all try to help each other out,.........well some of us do. Some just like to start trouble.

We have spoken before about this...........:dizzy:

Not bad for just three years huh? (onward and upward man!)

I feel I am qualified to give advice on climbing, you? (as a grizzled climbing vet, yes. go ahead and ask some of them boys i climb with on the daily. they'll tell ya. you still havent asked for any of my references)

Some just like to start trouble. ( i dont watch TV. this is my entertainment)

I use a double or triple fisherman knot. When you put this knot under a load it tightens up good!:greenchainsaw: treedog72
