knuckle boom suggestions

Hey guys I am thinking of putting a knuckle boom on my chip truck. I have a 93 International 4600 truck as the truck sits now with the tool box behind the cab it is legal to haul 6tons. I would like to replace the tool box that is in need of repair with the boom. Any suggestions on what kind of boom I should be looking for, I would like to keep it under 2000lbs if possible I have about 36inches between the cab and box. My goal is to be able to load that truck with logs (it has a removable top) and the other dumps with it and also be able to load the dingo into the truck at the end of day. From what I have read this seems possible but what is advertised on paper and real world is usually different. Any experience and help would be greatly appreciated I am looking for a used unit also not in my budget for a brand new one.
 
I have a rather old IMT kboom; it is much bigger than what you are seeking. My max load is 12k, but that is right beside the truck. I set 2 ton concrete blocks with it, 20' off to the side of the truck. Until you have a crane, you just don't realize how often you can use them.

It's been a very good machine for me. We routinely lift off the top and load logs and carry heavy stuff with it. You should understand that while it is a whole lot faster than chopping up and loading logs by hand, it doesn't compare well with a grapple truck.

My lot is rather crowded; sometimes we start up the crane to get a tractor attachment rather than move any trucks or shift trailers around. So far, I have never found anything better than that crane for straightening bent equipment. We use the outrigger to hold it down, then use the crane tip and the winch to force metal back where it used to be.
 
I think your gonna find a 2000 lb unit is gonna be lacking in the lifting department. Most of the knuckle boom grapples you see on tree trucks weigh around 4000 lbs.

Yep. I would guess mine is close to that heavy, but does not have a grapple. As a kboom, I wish it had more reach, too. Only 25' to the side, 35' straight up, it is impractical for any real aerial work.

If I could, I would have a grapple truck, with a nice heavy duty dump trailer hanging on the back as well.

Haul the bobcat with grapple attachment (or mini, if I had one), then double the loading capacity of the truck when you go to the landfill. On the jobsite, the loader can quickly haul bulky stuff up to the grapple, and the guys don't wear themselves out shagging stuff from the back yard.

I hate gooseneck trailers. They prevent you from using the truck bed.

The grapple trailers I have seen look like toys. I guess a really heavy duty trailer with a grapple on the front would be real neat: you could load truck and trailer. I suspect that would be too heavy for the hitch, unless it was too light a grapple to do the job well.

A big beast like that should have a monster trailer behind it as well. Put a 40k rated pintle hitch on that, and you could double your capacity.

Yep, that looks like a really nice truck. I'm jealous. You have more shiny paint and chrome on that than my whole fleet of trucks. :oops:
 
Most of the logs I pick up are under 3000 lbs. I wouldn't get a trailer loader unless it could pick that up mid pick. One big plus is I wouldn't have another truck to inspect every 6 months. I would think it would be less maintenance too. Make some ramps and you could haul the mini on the back of it.

We don't have a mini. Here's the trailer. And 2tree with your 1 ton you are thinking right with the trailer idea. Then when you want bigger you can get it.

Did you know that you can do your own inspections for DOT? Some guys think they have to pay for it at a mechanical shop.

All you have to do is declare the experience of your fleet mechanic (yourself, probably), then fill out the forms and have them waiting in the truck for Mr. DOT.

I know it's legit, because Mr. DOT told me I could during a god-awful audit at my office. He gave me the forms, and told me to make sure that I do those inspections.

I'll bet when you pull into a neighborhood with all that capacity, the trees start cringing and lifting their branches a little higher just to keep you from parking nearby.
 
You miss the point any grapple that he puts on hhis truck will be a improvement from a beat up tool box , my guess is call around get prices and specs , I've seen some decent grapples on single axle trucks . The guy up the street from me has a old international with a lemco with the old school pull out extension and loves it , I've seen some dinosaur looking pieces mounded in there too so if he's close to the side of the truck that little grapple can earn its money
 
Here in pa you need to be a state certified inspection mechanic so that would work. Plus without the window sticker you would be getting pulled over all the time
