We do quite a bit of work on a lake around here. Alot of the jobs can only be done in winter when there's ice. A customer that I bid on in November and told him that I needed ice to do the job, called on Monday and said go ahead. With a week of 40 plus and not being able to get to it until today I was hoping spring would hold off 1 more week. Well, the ice was a little thin by shore and 2 guys washed a leg, but its done. Come on spring!! Pete

I did several of those in the pas 2 weeks, one was on Big Cedar where we had to haul everything across the ice on a light trailer, then up the boatramp.

My 3/4 ton did a few 360's on the way out and on the way back (I did not have the trailer, mine is a tool truck). Going down the boatramp was a little scary with the packed snow/ice and me with allweather tires

Question for you guys.

First not trying to steal the thread i feel its related.

Second, i am from San Diego, California never ever have work like this.

But how thick does the ice need to be for you guys to drive across???

Thanks

Canyon

I won't drive a truck on ice because the insurance still considers it water, but a foot would be comfortable for a 1/2 ton. We use snow mobiles and ATV's for dragging over ice. Pete

Yeah, 12 - 14 inches is good depending on air temp.

It also depends on long term wind, the windward side could be all heaved up and cracked even with thick ice.

As for insurance, I will go out there if we are the only ones on the ice. I do not want to be there when other people are doing 360's .... or 720's in some cases.

If you are form SoCal, 25*F may sound cold, but it is great working weather when the sun is out.
