The guy I started out with had one of those old leather 2 D belts in the shop. He said that was what he started out climbing with. He called it a lineman's belt. Has to be the same exact belt you are talking about. Same description down to the tool pouches. He had an old rickety pair of pole spikes as well. These things were old. They didn't even have a brand name. They were stamped with a mining company name. He had some pretty cool older climbing gear.

It's going to be up to personal preference.

I have used the Petzl Microcender on my safety lanyards with the quick pin setup instead of the permanent bolt and I feel really secure. It would take a mean twist of fate to get it undone. If taking weight that pin is almost impossible to get out.

The only drawback that I can see is that, unlike a friction hitch, a person can't let out rope very easily while under load. Now a grigri could; you could take out slack and sit back into it and then use the handle to let out some rope if you needed to. I personally have both devices and use both. That being said, it's still going to be up to personal preference in the given situation.

And there's nothing wrong with using something like the klemheist knot as a friction hitch and getting much the same results; just make sure to check the integrity of the hitch periodically as rope does wear out over time.

Hope that helps. -Josh
