LOL, Tom. That reminds me of a friend of mine, George Dobis, a legend up in the Mt Baker area. He and Dusan Jagersky (who later died while climbing in AK with Jim Wickwire---who has been involved in many mtn tragedies) defected from Czechoslovakia during the '68 Mexico City Olympics. They were on the soccer team. George has a similar portable rope or wire tow, which he once had a heli buddy deposit on the south glacier of Mt Baker, way up near the summit. Some climbers reported the rather unusual upski activities to the Forest Service, who, knowing George, put two and two together, showed up at his door. By then, he had wisely skied it down the hill and had it hidden in his garage.
Knowing they had no hard evidence, he told 'em to take a hike, which they grudgingly did. MANY many more great stories I have heard from good old George!!!

In yet another search (trying to sharpen a beaver blade without getting cut up)....I came across this website. after reading the above posts seems like I'll have to look at it again later......I thought it was current, but maybe not. It has a pretty nice set of images showing the winch in use. Russ, did you ever get one?

Sure could have used something like this last week.

I think there was a question about raising a log up to a sawmill...don't have time to look for it, looks like this may be used in that application as well.

Hi Che,

No, I never got one but with spring only three months away, I should start thinking about it. They look way more versatile than a bumper mounted winch.

Russ

I was in the pawpaw woods last week, cutting up a cedar to make into some more kindling (it was laying against the shagbark hickory tree.) I don't mind hoofing a few cedar logs out...but I found a really nice sized osage orange tree that had been down for a while a bit deeper in the woods....I couldn't get the truck or tractor anywhere near. Looked around thinking if I could hook up a come-along to a tree and drag it out....little by little. Thought twice and said it will just have to stay where it was.

Saw that website's images and thought it would have worked well there. Post again if you get one, Russ.

(PS...got the beaver blade sharpened with no major injuries, and I think I can mend the jeans. )

No, I can't say I like them. They're said to taste like bananas, but I find the aftertaste nasty. My husband's brought more than a couple to work in his lunchbox though....he likes them so I'll bring them home when I beat the 'coons to them.

Any new word on this? After spending 3 hours digging my truck out this weekend, 8000 lbs of portable pull sounds pretty good.

Agreed, In fact I would really like to have one of the Mile Marker hydraulic, receiver set ups, but the dollars were adding up way to fast for that outfit. Also, being able to remove the winch from the vehicle is an appealing idea too.
