Hi Guys haven't been on here for a while and with good reason ,i managed to land the mother of all jobs .some of you might remember that the last time i posted ,i said there was a real shortage of decent trees over my way because of the shear amount of people that had started to sell firewood ,well am happy to tell you this is no longer the case .Ive started to work for a volunteer group called CVNI which is basically a volunteer conservation group which plant trees, hedges and manage habitats for wild birds and animals all over the north of Ireland, they also run small workshops for disabled children and adults which i think is a very noble cause indeed. So when you volunteer for them they in return ,pay for and put you though a variety of different courses all of which are land management and resource based and have a recognised certificate, diploma or city in guilds at the end ,so having land resource courses meant they offered chainsaw courses ranging from the most basic to advanced....RESULT!!! On landing at the workshop i took a quick look round the place and began to realise that there was large amounts of windblown and standing dead trees all over the place just being left to rot in the ground. I just thought what a shame that is,to let all that rot.So when i got the chance i asked the boss to take a walk round the place as id a few things to point out to him ,as we walked i began to explain to him just how much timber there was lying around and how he was a bit mad to be letting it go to waste like that, considering he was always having to go and buy wood from the timber yard he eventually started to listen but couldn't really understand the milling side of it . I came in on a Saturday and milled a few slabs and when Monday came i just told him to take a look round the place ,when he seen the slabs that was him converted to my way of thinking .I ended up getting the run of the things more or less plus my own team of workers and i can do as much milling as i want ,,But to top that off i can work my way through all the saw courses i like which am sure would cost a small fortune if you were to add them all up , and all that came from 3 big slabs of oak
Life's sweet again!!!!

Life's sweet again!!!! ...

It sure sounds that way!

Now - to save your back just figure out a way to get those logs (even partially off the ground)

Thanks guys it is a sweet gig and it definitely and without doubt ,beats milling poles ,in fact it doesn't really feel like your at work in a way, probably cause your out doing something you like ,its bad when your boss has to tell you to go home and that you've done enough for the day ,when your just getting into your stride..
Bob you must have read my mind cause i was just about to ask that exact question but there s no way you would be able to lift or roll some of the bigger sections believe me I've tried ,what about some sort of winch ,i could put a rope over a limb nearby, even getting one side up would be a big help!!
And yes those are burled trees in the background there's loads of them only problem is i can only use whats on the ground ,conservation and that so lets all say a prayer for high winds cause theres alot of standing dead ones ...LOL..:laugh:

Eddie,
Those burled trees look to be dangerously close to becoming hazards to humans and animals on the property. I suggest you and your boss consider the possibility of cutting them before they fall and hurt someone. You can never be too careful about those things.

Hank i was thinking that as well :laugh:but i cant really push the issue to much ,there is a good few standing dead that should be took down without doubt but again cant push to much ,don't want to spoil the bigger picture IE:getting as many certificates as i can, because that's a real good opportunity and one i intend to take .Ill enjoy clearing up whats down and usable first and it sure beats the hell outta milling poles and the like:laugh::laugh:..

Congratulations, looks like I good deal for you.
The other day I milled for an old man that was a bit skeptical about what he would get out of his trees, after seeing a couple thousand bft stack up, he started looking at his trees in a whole new light, I think he has the “sawdust fever”.
Enjoy the milling and hope for a good wind.
