tried to get some pricing on a portable lift.....I said I was going to use it for a small/specific tree job. without hesitation he said "I won't rent equipment for tree work"

lift rental business must be pretty good.....

Anybody ever run into this sort of thing?

Just get pricing on the lift not for purpose, if asked say light fixtures or something.

One place here has some of his lifts ''off limits '' for tree work,,,,,,unless he knows you and knows you're capable of using it without slamming stuff into it.They like to keep the newer ones nice and pretty ,,,until the painters or stucco guys cover them up anyway.

Must have been a small outfit. Anyone around here will rent for tree work. If they don't they miss a good part of their market.
Phil

A glimpse at the yard revealed at least 30 pieces of equipment in a variety of shapes and sizes....Didn't strike me as too small.....I'll probably revisit them at some point....

OK. I guess people have the right to rent their equipment to whoever they want. I did rent a a Bil-Jax 60 footer a few years ago. It was almost new and looked and worked great. 'Rented the same machine a year later and it was trashed. Covers were missing, stuff didn't work. It was a private rental outfit and they were pretty nice people. Hope they collected on someone's insurance. I know I've turned down a couple of painters because I know what my lift would look like when they were done.
Best of luck,
Phil

A few times I've made a call to a rental place without identifying myself and asked about renting a piece of equipment for tree work and been told they don't rent for that. Story changes as soon as they know who is calling.

I'm assuming you have insurance. Check with our agent to make sure they'll cover rented equipment and have enough coverage to replace the machine you want should you total it. Then go back the the rental yard with a certificate of insureance with their name on it. Talk to the manager/owner and see if they'll do anything for you then.

Accurate assumption and great idea thanks!

You're welcome. There's a good size rental yard by us that charges 30% for LDW if you don't provide a certificate of insurance. Some of their stuff (cranes) they won't even let out of the yard w/o verifying coverage. Just curious, what kind of lift do you plan on using?

I think that was part of the problem. I wanted to get info. on a variety of lifts as I had never rented one before....I wasn't sure what type I wanted - Maybe they thought I was a competitor or something shopping for info.??

I have heard of rental yards around me needing to hear some other use than tree work.

An errant limb raking the boom of a standard lift and breaking a hydraulic line means a one way ticket to the ground. I do not use lifts or bucket trucks and so do not know but was told that tree lift equipment has redundant systems to hold the boom up.
Is that accurate ?

Most places here won't rent out self propelled lifts for tree work, but they'll rent you the beat up towables. You also have to have a million worth of insurance to rent a self propelled, but not so for the towables, so it may be an insurance thing.
