It was a great conference; and those who slam the ISA for being money-grubbers should note that this and a lot of other info is given away at no charge , even though it cost a lot to put it together.

nctree, yes these services are profitable and will set you above the competition. Very good kind of work to promote your company as a tree CARE outfit rather than just treecudding.

Thank RacerX and treeser, both very info. I done some cabling here and there, most common ground splicing. I done a couple EHS cable jobs but would like to do more along with lightning protection. Doesn't seem like many tree guys around here do that stuff.

probably because strike probability is low in your area, just like here in WI.

This map shows a probability of no more then 4 strikes /sqkm/year in the vast majority of PA, the few spots that get more are probably high topography.

Doesn't the probablity increase as the tree age increases?

Seems to be that the hotter and more humid the climate is the probility increases looking at the map. Florida is very favorable to these conditions. Means more of a positive ground charge.

That map's pretty interesting. I had known that Florida was the lightning capital of the U.S., but I didn't realize just how bad it is.

NCTREE, ground saturation DOES count, of course, but I think it has more to do with the weather overhead. Florida gets a lot of energy from Atlantic storms.

I recall reading that the amount of energy released by lightning on the surface of the earth every 24 hours is more than the total energy contained in all the worlds nuclear arsenals.

:jawdrop:

that map has low resolution--there are hotspots in the green areas; see bill graham's talk at the symposium.

tree age not a factor imo; height is the biggie, duh...

I figured that the dispursion was not so smooth as the map shows. High ground will have a higher probability, and I'm sure there are geological properties that will gives an area a higher charge then others.

heat lightning is the same as ground lightning
