I have a old axe handle, put hash marks @ 16 and 18 on it. Its cut to 18 length.
Then I walk the log and use an old small hand saw and put hash marks on the log,, using the old axe handle to measure.
If the handbrake comes along she does that as I cut.

I've had a couple of PM's asking me why tree service companies cut logs too short. The manager said to me, "We always cut the waste shorter than firewood size. That makes the waste easier to throw onto the truck for the recyclers. We could care less about firewood."

Even if I request 16" to 18" lengths, tree service companies never seem to listen, and my customers rarely want anything as short as what they cut. I just don't have that many pot belly stove customers. Last year I personally burned a lot of shorties, but hardly anybody else wanted to buy them.
My stove will take a 16" in front to back, and a 19" (20", if it's the first log in) side to side. I get to scrounge a lot of wood that way. ;)

But, if you sell firewood, very few want to receive 9" to 11" chunks. One time I brought a bunch of those shorties on board along with normal firewood lengths. The customer threw them all right back into the truck and requested an immediate rebate. Rather embarrassing and I have never done that again.

Sounds like a bougie customer more than anything. Short pieces like that aren't desirable but I dang sure don't throw em out. Just keep em at one end of the shelter by the wood burner, when I go outside for the final fill of the evening I'll try to use whatever I have to pack it full for a good all night burn. Those shorties come in handy for stuff like that.

I imagine. I'm glad I get some wood cheap or free (I cut most of my own, but I'll take shorties for cheap or free if offered). But I don't expect people doing it for a living to be thrilled about it, for sure.

Made a magnetic bar length marker out of an old “big game” sized carbon arrow with aluminum inserts on both ends. Northern Tool magnet on one end, milk jug cap on the other. 18” because that’s my stove’s optimal length.
