I was splitting about a cord of wood the other day and while i was splitting the hydraulic fluid started spewing out the cap. actually looked like it was pi$$ing. excuse the analogy... don't know how else to explain it.

It has a small hole in the filler cap... and that is where it is coming from.

It was 85-90 degrees out... not sure what the hell I was doing out in the heat, but it needed done!

Any help would be appreciated.

btw it's a 22 ton Yard Machines by mtd. if that helps.

Log Splitter Question

The fluid is getting to hot, and expanding my dads does the
same thing. He has to let it cool off and add more fluid so he
uses it on cool days if possible, that's alot of work on a hot
day anyway.

Thanks for the reply...

I was wondering if that was the case. I shut it off right away and let it sit a while and also spun the splitter around the the cap was on the up hill side... didn't have any more problems after that.

I just wanted to make sure nothing major was wrong with it.

you are right... that is too much work for the heat:dizzy:

If the breather was on the downhill side of the splitter, then you could have been creating an air pocket in the downhill end of the reservoir. As the oil heats up, the air in the "pocket" can expand and put pressure on the fluid. NEVER open the breather cap with the splitter running. An air pocket could "burp" and spew hot fluid out of the breather! I've seen it happen... twice... (different guys). Always try to keep the reservoir level and make sure the tank can breathe!

I just fixed my cousins MTD splitter filled tank to 1" below neck,as sticker says to, then began splitting. Same thing happened oil peed out all over ground. I figured tank is big enough that it wont miss that much. :greenchainsaw:
