I'm trying to get a few more years out of Dads log splitter form him. Its about a 99 model Yard machines 5.5hp Briggs 22 ton. Has split tons of wood. Repowered it 2 years ago with a Harbor freight engine and had to rig up a pump mount. briggs had a stubby shaft. Fast forward to now finally got a real mount and decided to clean up the unit as it has a hydro leak thought it was the suction hose wrong. Found a crack in the tank where the engine mount is welded on. Any suggestions I think a new tank unit is out of the question . I have welder but would take this one to a Pro?WP_20151101_002[1].jpg WP_20151101_002[1].jpg

well... first ya put the fire department on speed dial... (just kidding, kind of)
First drain the oil from the tank. if you have a mig, then run the tank full of the inert gas. The remaining oil will vaporize but not explode if there isn't available oxygen. Filling it with water would work but the water would leak into the crack and screw up the welding.
Clean up that area real nice, and run a nice wide bead, and keep moving don't burn thru.

One time, I was fixing up a 12" cube tank I had built. It had a couple pin hole leaks, no big deal... I thought if I was "quick enough".... well the result was my cube tank ended up a bit more like a round ball :surprised3: That hydraulic oil went off quite nicely and the fill cap was removed or I might have had a serious bomb...

You have been warned.
