recently ive been looking for a way of speeding up milling smaller logs. ive been using a 48" alaskan, small log mill and mini mill with great success on larger timber or timber where its easier so bring a very small mill to the tree.

now i want to cut a lot of thin boards using timber i can move to a mill. i was looking at the Logosol M7. has any body used one?

the kerf is also something i want to change. can i get a 1.3mm bar for my ms880 ( logosol make one for the 660)?? i know most people will say its to small for the saw, but my thinking is if used only on small logs just to cut thin boards.

i cant seem to find a comparison of kerf sizes for the different chains.

thanks

chris

Picco is not recommended for the 880. You could run 325, though.

Really no advantage to an 880 on small logs, but I suppose one uses what one has.

Lots of old threads on the M7. It has an excellent reputation.

yep the 880 is all i have to mill. with hind sight the 660 would have been a better bet all round. its been great on larger jobs. not sure i would decrease the kerf by much if i went to .325. i will check out the threads on the M7.

I have the M7 and have milled over 12000bf with a Stihl 066. I also have an 880 and got a 25" .063ga bar to use it on the M7 thinking it would "sing". Boy was I disapointed. The 066 is noticibly faster. The 880 shines when I put the 52" bar on it and start slicing off flitches that are 3 to 4 feet wide or more.
I do not think you will find a .050ga bar for a 880.

I am running 3/8 .063 880 its good enough. I run a 36 inch mill so its alot easier to handle. When I get something that does not fit I just run down both sides of the log. Maybe two runs. I Cant justify the 48 inch mill.

Classic case of chain speed limitations. On a 25" bar the rakers have to be dropped by ~20% on the 880 for it to keep up with the 660. On these narrow cuts the rakers can be dropped even further to improve cutting speed. Cuts do get pretty rough though.
