Hello All,

I am going to build a logsplitter and have a question???? The plans I have call for the main beam to be a 6" x 25# that costs $200. It seem like and over kill for 5.5hp engine and a 11gpm pump. I have access to many "FREE" I-Beams that are 6' x 15# Does anyone know how the lighter beam would affect or not affect the splitter? I could easily weld in gussets near the splitting wedge to add strength to that section of the beam. I am not using the splitter for commercial use only for wood at home and camp and don't forget the chisler friends that will borrow it.

Thanks

The main reason to use the wide flange is to get bigger bearing area for the slide guide, more so than danger of bending. Some designs were prone to jam. I think there is quite a bit on splitters on the heavy equipment forum. Django had a nice guide design on the one he is building.
