I wonder how many poles they took out this year on State ground? I know I've been seeing lots of loads of them down here.

Export, Formark, They used to have a yard in Tacoma, but its shut down for now while they build a new one, little farther north (not sure why they would shut it down and build another... you'd think that building one while the other was operating would be wiser.)

Everett is a bit of a hike from Grays harbor, but you should be able to make yer case to the buyer.

Ok, I've called a lot of mills, some close and some pretty far away, and tried to get a hold of their buyers, but can't get any of them on the phone. They don't answer calls or return them. How do I get my foot in their door?

Remember it is hunting season I'd take a good guess lots of them are on vacation. Some places won't buy unless you have all the right certifications.

I didn't think of that. Figured they were just like the subcontractors I deal with. The problem I have is that I need to start clearing soon and need to know how to prep the trees I am going to take out. The easiest for me to deal with would be just cut them all up into 8' sections and stack them in the corner of the property to either be cut up for firewood or rot. That seems like a waste though. I assume a mill will want them in 17' or longer lengths, but I don't know what minimum diameter they are looking for or anything else.

At this point I'd be happy to hire the work out except that I don't think the quantity is enough to make it worth it to someone to mobilize out here and I would like to minimize the impact to the property and the trees that will be left.

Perhaps another option to consider?
Would be to deck enough & have a portable
Mill come on site once or twice.

I thought about that. The only issue is that I don't have a use for green lumber.

There are about 18 trees that need to be taken out for the first stage of construction. Between 14-22" diameter at chest height around 100' tall. Later (there is a mobile home that is going to be demolished in the way right now) there will be 6 larger trees 24" 120+' tall and more smaller 10-16" 100'ers. Ideally it would be two trips with a self loader due to logistics of staging and construction/demolition work, but I could possibly make it work as one.
Is there even enough timber there to make it worthwhile?

Some of its a tad small, but doable, yer right in the park of 2 plus loads Depending those first 18 getting 2 logs per tree... Hard to tell without boots on the ground.

I've done one load jobs, and half load jobs (though the half load jobs just aren't worth moving the machine in). Part timing like me could have all trees down and out in 3 weeks or so, Full time folks could probably get it done in a week or so, less if there is room to move.

Getting the mobile gone would be priority one, if you plan on hiring out the logging, the less crud in the way the easier it is for the logger, the more money you stand to make in the end.

The smaller 10" dbh trees may or may not end up as fire wood, or pulp, but from the sounds of it the rest has at least some potential

To add into Northman most mill the top size is 5", depending on the price differences you can come up cutting shorter logs it all depends on price and specs.

I've only been able to get a hold of the buyer from Interfor in PA so far. They're only looking for 10+" tops 26'-36'. It looks like I'm going to have a lot of little logs left to try and get rid of. @Skeans what about mills down by you? you said they buy 5"+? Aberdeen is 2.5-3 hours away, but it might be worth calling if they will take more of the smaller stuff.

Down by me is Interfor, Rsg, Stimpson, and Weyerhaeuser. Stimpson small log mill is an hour or so south down in Gaston, Oregon. If Aberdeen is that far for you I'm even farther south.

Where you folks at anyway? sounds like maybe out on the peninsula? Could be that hauling to Tacoma or Ever rot may be the way to go. Lots of Weyco, and Green Diamond land out that way makes it tough for private logging...

If and a big educated guess if your close to one of the ferry lines you may be able to get a self loader to haul across the sound. For not to much more???

I know down here they flooded the domestic mills real hard after the summer we had so they aren't really taking much.
