A buddy and I are looking to buy a used chipper for our very part time business and around the house usage. Since we won't use it everyday and we don't want to spend all that much $ (hoping to spend south of $5k), we obviously don't expect to find a new 14" diesel chipper. I already have a cute little Troy Built HO chipper and I know we need something much more productive.

Neither one of us knows all that much about these things so we could use some help with what we should or shouldn't be looking for. Disc vs drum is Greek to us... The only thing we do know is we would prefer to get a hydraulic feed machine if possible as I understand this is much safer.

Can you guys please quickly run through the ABCs for me?

TIA!

Well, that whole disk vs. drum issue is on-going, but FWIW I see some good deals this week over on treetrader.com, just make a login, also check this site here.

I see more of the tiny units using a disk, I don't know if that's because they require less power to work? I like my drum, I have no personally experience with the disk but do notice that around here the drums are more popular.
